SoCal/Mojave Desert Airstrips - Videos

Just making a thread to form a commonplace for some videos that highlight some of the fun airstrips in the Southern California Mojave Desert. Feel free to get out and explore these strips yourself!

First, the most recent 're-addition' to the local airstrip group, Johannesburg. Through the support of the RAF and many local volunteers, the strip has been repaired after several decades of neglect.

Goler Heights is another RAF sponsored strip, restored back in 2016. It's a little (ok very!) dusty, but a fun easy strip to start out with.

Cinder Cone/Fossil Falls is a popular lakebed landing site in the Owens Valley with a short hike down to the rather surreal Fossil Falls volcanic rock formations.

Rabbit Island is just a stretch of the lakeshore at Lake Isabella, near Kern Valley Airport (L05) that's frequented by planes. Neat rocks, grass can get a bit long. There are other landing sites in the immediate vicinity.

Panamint Valley, just one valley west of Death Valley, has several landing sites, the Panamint Springs Resort features good food, accommodations, camping, and beer on tap! Minietta Mine is still a bit of a work in progress (looking for volunteers in November to help fix that). And Ballarat is just always a cool stop.

The Chicken Strip and the associate hot springs are infamous in the world of California backcountry flying, and nearby is another interesting stop, Darwin!

Carver's Cut (Private, Prior Permission Required) is a popular spot up in the Sierras. The strip is private, but often hosts public fly-ins, so keep an eye out for those events if you want to visit!

More to come!
