Somebody crashed the Champ

But it wasn't me.

Once again, the laws of Murphy come crushing down to enforce the universal rarity of rental taildraggers.

Luckily the pilot walked away.

Ever-insightful commentary from the online readership:

Great news that all involved are ok. I do find it ironic that it crashed on Cessna street. Based on the size of the plane, it is likely a Cessna.

Re: Somebody crashed the Champ

How in the hell do you do that in a Champ?

Is it just me, or does the average age of those firemen in that photo seem to be about 18??

Torque roll. He cobbed the throttle and rolled his foreskin right up over his eyes. All that horsepower will do that to you.

Thats the truth! Seems like the pacer I rent at SPB seems to have some unfortunant incident about every 18 months or so.

Always sad to see another classic leave on a flatbed.

2 1/2 miles...

Isn't that like a three day flight in a Champ?

1.5 days with a tailwind...this baby was 90hp!

Looking at that photo of the firefighters, it looks like far left is a reasonably cute girl.

Re: Somebody crashed the Champ

I was hoping to race that Champ someday, even if it did have 15 more horses than my Tcraft. I don't know how long it takes to go that far, I am usually too busy peddling.

Re: Somebody crashed the Champ

That sucks Z- I'm sorry to hear it. A buddy of mine just bought a '46 65hp, and we've had tons of fun in it. I could do touch and goes for hours.

Hopefully yours will be rebuilt...

Yeah. No skin off my back, but it was the only rental taildragger around here that was affordable and doesn't require $100K worth of renter's hull coverage (another local FBO has a Carbon Cub and Sport Cub.)

Re: Somebody crashed the Champ

Glad it wasn't you... or so you are claiming. ;-)

Dave Luse at Camas has a rental Champ.

There's a guy out at Scappoose who has a Pacer that Fern_Hopper has rented.

Pearson has a J-5 Cub.

I don't know what they are charging, currently. My foggy memory says the Champ was the least expensive of the three.

Re: Somebody crashed the Champ

 that's nuts! Love to know the rest of the story. Glad the media is clueless about LSA, the last thing we need is some numb nuts reporter trying to show a causal relationship between a loss of power and self certifying. Glad the pilot was able to walk away!

Re: Somebody crashed the Champ

Holy underwear. I thought that was joke at first, the fireman responding to some unrelated issue outside one of those restaurants with a plane on the roof. Gotta hear the rest of this story.

Amazed at how intact the main fuselage is.

Re: Somebody crashed the Champ

A friend was on the field and watched the crash. He said the guy lost control on the ground.
He got it in the air but perpendicular to the runway, horses it over the trees, and the left wing droped.
