Sometimes, Two Horsepower is All You Need

A friend of mine, Rod Snyder, took this picture in the early 70's. Let's see if you sharp eyed Backcountry types can tell where this was taken. No fair looking in the NTSB data base, it is there. We all should beware of the cause, summer is just around the corner.

Shaffer Meadows or Spotted Bear are my guesses.

Re: Sometimes, Two Horsepower is All You Need

I am guessing Schafer Meadows.

Good reminder that the warm weather is coming and our machines don't perform as we are accustomed to when it's cool.

I don't think the mountains around Schafer or Spotted Bear look like the ones in the photo. Could be wrong though.

All I know is that riding a horse up the river like that looks quite pleasant.

Not surprised to see yet another V-tail go down in a density altitude take-off. (I assume take off) Used to get them quite often at South Tahoe - Truckee - etc [-X

Never been in what looks like a "lower" section of the SALMON <edit> that late in the year. (colors)
Never flown that low nor in that direction. (view looks to be upstream with my fuzzy old vision)
Will try to use some terrain clues, and some old down stream approach memories, to possibly reconstruct the approach to a nearby strip. [-o< [-o< (Not the one I am assuming the Bo took off from)

Damn - how do I get back to the picture without losing this?

The dark ridge of trees on the left looks familiar. Take off left to right. (I hope) [-o<
There may be a slab of slate on the opposite side of the river and just upstream from the above mentioned tree line.
As I recall there are two "usual" ridges that rise up on the right side of the river which are used as turn around spots. One is a shorter approach and the other drops you down over Buckskin Bills place.
On the return to land you get over to and stay on the left side of the river, (right side in photo) and look for a certain set of rapids immediately beyond the quick decision turn into Wilson Bar.
Been fun - even if I missed.

Am I even close? [-o<

My first job as a kid was cleaning horse stalls. That's as close as I've gotten and is probably the reason I've avoided them since.

We had a horse when I was a kid. The only way we could afford to stable it was by mucking all the stalls in the barn once a week. I liked that horse, but that was hard work. The kind of work you sign your kid up for when they're young to "build character." wait...

You know, the older I get the smarter my parents get.

Must have something to do with a horse ranch.

You know what else they rode up that river? A Caterpillar D8 with a snorkel kit on it, or so the story goes. It's how they graded those strips.

Re: Sometimes, Two Horsepower is All You Need

I surrender - I have never taken off from Makay Bar and was trying to picture the country in reverse.

Also never been to the other two strips.
Remember reading about several trips going into Reds and or Minam.. Think I read one is closed?!?
Seems if ya missed the first on you could skip over a fence into the next one or something like that.

Thanks again Robert

Maybe you have another or two.

God put me here to accomplish a certain amount of things...right now I'm so far behind, I'll never die!!

Re: Sometimes, Two Horsepower is All You Need

The first time I went into that strip I was right seat in a straight tail 182. We had come over the top from Baker City and followed the Minam downriver and set up on a left downwind. Being in the right seat I didn't get a good look at the strip until we were coming out of base to final. I remember thinking we were pretty high, and kept waiting for my buddy to throw in an aggressive slip or something. Looking up the canyon I was not too excited about the prospect of going around.

As much as I tried to keep my mouth shut and let him concentrate, I couldn't stand it any more as we passed completely over the strip and continued out to the river bend below tree top level. That's where I let loose with a "WTF are you doing!!?" [-o<

About that time the nice long strip at Red's came in to view. I hadn't realized there were two strips  ...what a pretty sight! =D>
