Sad deal all around... I called gtpc as soon as I hear about it because I knew he was at the coast in the 182... I'm still at a loss on why they decided to fly a 172 from Brookings to GP at night of all times... Prayers to the families involved...

I see the search is called off already.
Sad to see.

I read they found pieces, charts, and a backpack, in the surf. Any hope for good news is grim to non-existent at that point. I'm sure the families would like to have the bodies retrieved but that's unlikely too.

Half a century spent proving “it is better to be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.”
Brookings can be an absolute black hole departure. Especially using rwy 30 on a moonless night and turning left crosswind over the water. But, who knows at this point.
