Sportcub for the backcountry

Sometimes the most fun way to get into the backcountry, Part 103 Ultralights and Light Sport Aircraft have their own considerations.

Ralph (centmont) says it all, I got my ticket in sport cub #6, and have over 260 hours on her now if I could, I would take 7AK to bed with me as she is my mistress!

From landing on the ocean beaches:

to mountain strip landings:

to landing in a farmers yard, introducing yourself and sharing in his shop/hanger full of antique airplanes!

I have flown her most everywhere in WA with two big guys but be aware of density altitude and plan for it. Try getting two big guys in a J3 comfortably! The sport cub is more like a light super cub than a J3 and actually takeoffs and landings are shorter than super cubs!

A stock sport cub won its class last year at the Valdez STOL contest with, I believe 66'!

Its all good! depending on your type of flying but for pure cub driving in back counrty or low country its sure hard to beat the sport cub! What can I say but come ride in it!

That is true. However, Paul Klaus was the pilot!!!

It was actually Mat Piat, but from what I hear he is a really good cub pilot.

F19 is another good choice, I would love to find a good one. There are just not many of them around that I can find. Good cruise, good fuel burn, and a really nice big baggage with a decent useful load.

Cub a like

Nathan,

The people at Cub Crafters build an awesome airplane that is a beautiful flying machine. The question was more about the performance at higher elevations and in tight landing strips. In the video with the CC what is the elevation? and correct me if I am wrong the take off roll is around 7-8 seconds or around 600 feet at with 2 people. The video of the Outlaw was at 4,000+msl and takes about 2 seconds or 120' for lift off. My Highlander on a hot day, DA 2500' or so will get airborne in 100' and at max gross (me and my 300+ lb man friend) is about 300'.

If your not living on the edge, you're taking up too much space.

Ski's

For those interested the gear legs on the Highlander and the Outlaw are cub style with 1.25 axles so all the aftermarket stuff bolts on.. :D

Hi
are those the 26" Airstreaks?
do you use them on paved strips and are you happy with them?
Thanks

Thanks Jeff. I missed the last part of your question earlier; a SportCub is more than adequate for light to moderate back country work. Big Brother Clay stopped into Johnson Creek and several other strips while working and flying a SportCub. It can handle the occasional mountain gathering with delight. And not that speed matter's below 200kts; but while delivering a SportCub, I had a 180 SuperCub in chase and we both paced at 2500rpm/110mph. So if your buddies go out for a flight, you can keep up. If you're serious, call them up and ask for a demo and fly up to Rimrock (4S6). It sits about 3000msl and will give you a good feel of the airplane at altitude.

George, great pictures of the sandbox adventure! Looks like it was a blast.

Lynn; you're correct, I used 2/3's of the 900ft runway. I'm positive the airplane can lift off a whole lot sooner, but I won't push for the max performance takeoff unless it's warranted. I practice to be competent and capable of using 100% of the aircrafts performance, but try to never put myself into a situation where I need it. It becomes a financially dangerous area, when you push any piece of equipment to it's limit. Plus I'm not going to risk a life other than my own for an extra 300 feet. If you look at the video again, you'll see the camera stops bouncing about halfway down the takeoff roll; it was ready to fly.

Only once have I put myself into a situation where I need EVERY BIT of performance. I was in a SportCub on takeoff when the airplane had to fly NOW. I can honestly say, if it had been a SuperCub, Husky, J3, or Champ; I would have had a broken airplane. Because of that, I hold a SportCub with high regard and respect.

BccCubGuy; they 26" Airstreaks. That airplane was the 2007 Southeast demo and spent majority of it's time on pavement. We never saw any adverse wear, and I'm in love with them. Hope to put a set on my Champ soon.

As for high altitude ops, I've cruised at 14,500 and 15,500 still making +500fpm. Clay could give better first hand knowledge of high DA situations. I use to get the occasional phone pic of him cruising along at 17,500msl, picking up the winds headed east bound.

I have the 26" Airstreaks on My Champ and I like them much better than the 26" Goodyear "blimp" tires I previously had on it. They are like landing on marshmellows. As for landing on pavement.....haven't done it yet as the nearesrt paved strip is 25-30 miles away and I fly from my own strip.
This is what they look like on my Champ:http://www.joea.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=2641

I'm comfortable taking a SPORT CUB into any strip behind a Supercub, comparably equipped with tires and comparably loaded. Any length, any elevation, any DA. Would be more than willing to demonstrate.

Power to weight is close to that of a 150hp -18 when you compute. 850 EW/100hp vs 1150EW/150. Divide power into weight and compare the two, their within .02 of each other. Same airfoil, same general dimensions...i.e similar performance. Thats dirty math of course, but it makes sense to me. Now obviously SPORT CUB doesn't have the payload capability, but its not supposed to. Determine your mission profile and pick the aircraft that suits it best. I personally feel that the SPORT CUB is the best of its breed, far superior to other new offerings on the market, certified or otherwise. If I had the financial ability I would own one myself.

The pics of mine that Nate posted previously were from a ferry flight I did from YKM to ATL here a couple weeks ago. Left CubCrafters first light on Dec. 20th. Made Billings that night. KC the second. ATL the third.

Details here: http://www.supercub.org/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=17432

The airplanes are very capable travelers.

Here's my SPOT track:

CC makes a great airplane....I just had to build on a budget and try to get some performance. I like having 620 lbs of useful load.

Only problem I have with the Sport Cub is that butt ugly cowling.
