Re: Spring Utah Fly-in ?

I'd be interested in something like that. Weather always plays an important factor as winds are usually high during that time.

We spent 2 weeks around the 5 corners area in March without a windy day,Are you talking some of the higher fave Mountain strips ?
That's an issue all the time to watch, early AM or PM planning..
I guess the date determins what you want to do..
I think the 5 corner's the best in the USA. Im exited to go back "3-10?"
I just got a 5th wh.toy hauler to bring the Cycle,ATV,
and whatever out there for a few weeks this spring.
But Still looking for some Fly-in camping, hiking to Fly to.
We're getting older every day !

I MIGHT, and I stress might, be in Kanab for a bike get together May 17 to 24. Wouldn't mind driving by. It all depends on me being in a position to quit my job in Saudi. Of course that depends on the economy.... [-o<

Re: Spring Utah Fly-in ?

Matt is correct, winds are usually the highest in the spring down there. Mornings are hit and miss but there is usually at least a breeze Mar-early June.

We have a motorcycle club ride at Dubinky (10-mile wash) which is right underneath the White Wash airstrip. If the winds blow, we ride instead of fly. I think it is the 1st weekend of May but I will have more details in February. Its always a good time and we usually base out of Green River.

Re: Spring Utah Fly-in ?

Not flying related but a blast is the Moab Jeep Safari the week before Easter each year. Been into jeeping even longer than flying, and been flying 43 years. I have had jeeps all over the western states the last 30 years. Found most of the backcountry roads flying the 185 over the west. Enjoy flying that Silver State and jeeping that state even more.
See you in Moab. Ron

Re: Spring Utah Fly-in ?

EJS would be a good time to head over. I've been to EJS plenty of times, but sold the jeep for the plane (it was getting expensive!). The weather always seems to be pretty decent around then too. Maybe the week after as well.

Re: Spring Utah Fly-in ?

I was at Caveman/Tangri-la a week or so ago, and Rod(Tangren-owner) said he would like to host a flyin out of there if you would like to base out of there, I think you would like it. It is close to fuel, and a lot of other strips, besides being a great/interesting place to camp, with lots of room to park planes.

Re: Spring Utah Fly-in ?

Had the Maule all packed and ready to go to Tangrila last year with Gary and a few other back country brothers, but the winds were 40 knots gusting to 50 all along the last 150 miles of my route... so I canceled...and I think, Gary, you guys were sort of stuck on the ground at Tangrila most of the weekend if I'm correct... I really wanted to make that trip too....

Re: Spring Utah Fly-in ?

Was interested in doing some spring flying in that neck of the woods last spring, but things kind'a went to hell wx wise about April 1st. Flyinbeekeeper says the best time is in the fall...wx is a lot more stable. If it should come about this spring, I would try to make it. Rob and I had some good wx in Sept of '09. HC

Re: Spring Utah Fly-in ?

We did a weekend thru a Moab Jeep Jam .
Unless your there to party with a group on site, that's not the time to be out on the trails,
The traffic and dust makes it a place I would avoid within a hundred miles. just my 2 cents.
Maybe someone knowing our options better can suggest places.
How about a place some can drive or bike to ?
March April ?

Re: Spring Utah Fly-in ?

I talked to a guy yesterday that has an Antique Power Show every year.

http://richardericksonfoundation.org/powershow.htm

http://richardericksonfoundation.org/do ... Poster.pdf

Lots of cool old equipment, trucks, Steam Tractors (huge Steam Tractors!), Motorcycles etc. The show is in June and I was asking him about letting us fly in. He owns a 206 and has a private strip right there with places for camping and even showers. His friend does fly overs in a T28 and I think a couple of other old warbirds come by too. He said he had offered this to the Utah Backcountry pilots site once and never got a response.

He was going to think about it and see if we could come in during the show or he might just let us come in by ourselves. The show is really great and has lots of live demonstrations of working equipment from the turn of the century till now. Lots of people attend and even if you don't fly in it is worth seeing.

I told him about this site and he might start posting. I will stay up on it if we don't hear from him because it would be a great place for a fly in.

Jerry

PS: Anyone interested in starting a Wendover Breakfast or Dinner Run? Lots of pilots within a couple hundred miles. Wendover has shuttles to the Casinos and lots of Buffets.

Gary:

Tangri-la would be a good spot. I would be glad to promote it to the NM crowd. How about looking at after 4/15 though so my workload will slow down some.

Let me know if you want to push forward.

I like the idea of Tangrila. I'd do my best to join, just let me know when.

You're never too old to learn something stupid.

Re: Spring Utah Fly-in ?

Hey Larry
Sorry, I didn't notice that you post was addressed to me #-o . Rod is fine with a group party anytime. Just let me know, and I will talk to him to make sure the time is open. I do know that Lori has been talking with him about possably doing a seminar down there in April, but I don't think anything defineate has been decided yet.
Anyways, just say the word. I like the idea of bringing the NM guys over. Maybe we can show them some of the Utah strips and get them pumped up to get the ball rolling on the NM strips. =D> =D>

I am meeting with the NMPA rep today and I will pitch the idea. Once I have a date, maybe you can coordinate with the Trainga-la folks.

Thanks!! Larry
