Steve's Aircraft Skylight questions

Have you modified your aircraft? STC? STOL Kit? Major rebuild from just a data plate?

Steve's Aircraft Skylight questions

On the Pacer w/ O-360/CS thread, Brian said: "We are going to install one of our extended skylights while we got her down to the tubing."

Thought I might as well ask my questions here, so everyone can share the answers... I'm up for a fuse recover later this year on a PA-22-150.

Can you say more about the Skylight STC. I read on your web page that some welding is required. I'm assuming just adding some tabs? Since the STC is paperwork only, does it start with a flat piece of plexi? How much labor do you expect, given the fabric is already off? Ever have trouble with leaking water (your opportunity to tell me how spiffy your sealing technique is)?

You said 'extended' in the quote. Do you have two versions of the mod (an *un* extended one as well?) I read in the STC description it extends from the windshield to speaker.

Do you have a list of satisfied owners I could touch bases with (off list if you like)?

I've had the plane for going on four years, and I'm still waiting for a cheap annual. It doesn't help that I keep finding goodies I want to add.

For some reason southern Oregon seems to be Pacer (and Tri-Pacer) country. I wonder why...huh Brian! I had my Pacer for about seven years and sometimes still wish I had it along with a few more mods. I never had Steve's Aircraft install the extended skylight, but have flown in three or four that have and it really opens up the cockpit. One lady here had a nice retractable sunscreen that could be pulled open or closed, allowing the direct sun to be filtered when needed.

Another nice mod for the Pacer is the adjustable rudder trim. Not until I got a bigger plane with rudder trim, did I realize how nice it is on long trips. I hopped in my Cessna 140 a week or so ago and made about a six hour trip and by the time I got home was thinking that someone needs to create an STC rudder trim for it too. BRIAN? :D

Benton,

The Skylight is the very first STC that my Dad applied for. He received approval around 1982 for it. Yes, welding is involved in the installation for attaching the plexiglass. Originally, the length was limited to 21 inches, or just in front of the cabin speaker. Dad stopped it there because there is a 3/8 former that runs across the cabin right above the speaker and of course to retain the speaker. I recently amended the STC because of several installers asking for a longer length. So, in January of 08 I started on a new drawing package to include two different lengths for the skylight opening. I also submitted the paperwork to include the PA-15 and PA-17 Vagabond's to the STC. I received approval for both lengths a few weeks later. So, depending on the owner, you can either install a 21 inch OR a 31 inch skylight.

As Roger said, we have our share of Pacer's and Tri-Pacers in the area. There also seems to be an unusually high number of Super Cubs here also. So it goes to show why we have developed so many STC's for both aircraft. And Roger, as far as that trim for your 140, you going to be around on Friday, we can talk then...... :D
