Stinson 108 covering with PolyFiber
Aircraft building and project-level overhaul forum -- Kitplanes, experimental amateur-built, homebuilding, or even restoration of certified aircraft.
Hi all! First post.. I have recently been passed down a project Stinson 108. its a '46 Voyager 150 that was flown for a few years, disassembled in '54 and has been apart since. I've been working on it slowly as funds roll in for the past year and a half and have gotten to the point where i could cover the ailerons. Just out of curiosity, has anyone here covered one before? I'm wondering if i can use the old tapes off as a template of the original cotton fabric i still have. There are six sheet metal screws securing the fabric to the bottom of the aileron and on the original, instead of running a tape completely over the rib from the trailing edge over the leading edge and back down, it just has a square patch that's about two inches wide by two and a half inches long just to reinforce around it. Is anybody's still covered like that with a small reinforcement tape or is it a complete tape all the way around? Just wanted mine to look as close to original as possible. Any thoughts or suggestions?

Don't know Stinsons, but you should get a free copy (used to be anyway) of the Poly Fiber "bible". It will get you lined out properly.

I do have a copy on hand but they say ribs under the section where they're showing how to cover a wing. I guess I should probably shoot them a call and see. Last i tried, the fellow that knew his stuff was supposably out. Haven't been able to find any clear pictures of a covered aileron either. I have Univairs' wing blueprint but that doesn't help much either. Completely lost on the fuselage as well... The fabric was never on there when I got it and I can't see where it used to be anchored. Trying to do my best with Westons restoration page..

Threw PolyFiber a call and talked with one of the gurus. I have the go ahead to cover exactly as original without straying from the STC. Now I just need to find someone with some restoration pics to see where to anchor my fuselage fabric to. Thanks, Alex.
