Stinson 108 Prebuy in BC

Could anyone recommend a good wrench for a pre buy on a Stinson 108-3 with Franklin 165 in Southern BC? Preferably Vancouver/Fraser Valley? Vancouver Island would work too.

Dale Floyd at Coast Dog Aviation in Pitt Meadows or Rick Church at Langley Aero Structures in Langley. There are probably many more but those are the first two that come to mind and both have a good reputation.

So did you buy the Stinson? What did the prebuy turn up? I went through the same drill back in November 2016 with a few lessons learned about educating yourself on what to look for. Got a good machine...but a few surprises too.

Re: Stinson 108 Prebuy in BC

I used Doug Wilson from Wilson Aviation based out of Boundary Bay. I am _VERY_ pleased with his work.

Prebuy took about 12 hrs, we went through everything as much as we could as it was a tough decision as to wether the plane was worth purchasing or not. Airplane showed up in substantially poorer condition than advertised. The owner was a real piece of shit and started a bidding war on price AFTER I had completed the prebuy. We had a signed and agreed upon purchase agreement prior to starting the prebuy.

In the end I ended up paying the dickhead because I have an empty hangar and I needed a plane RFN if I am going to get my ppl before the end of summer.

I am happy now though. I will end up spending more than if I waited another year or two for the right deal to pop up, but I couldn't wait another year or two, so here I am.

Here she is after about some much needed attention, she doesn't looks so bad now.

I am on the lookout for a set of corrosion free108-3 wings to recover, doors, and seat frames.

I should look through my hangar for you.. I'm almost sure I have doors and seat frames kicking around.

That would be great Mike. I should be soloing in a week or so, pending weather. I was hoping to fly over and see you sometime in the next couple of weeks.

Ok. I tried contacting him on what engine it had. Never heard back.
Glad to hear you got into a plane, I'll keep my eyes open for the parts that you need.

That's a good looking Stinson! From a 1000 miles away and through a computer screen, it looks pristine. And that's what matters, right? ;)

Congrats on your new plane!

Re: Stinson 108 Prebuy in BC

It has the Franklin 165 in it. If the wife and I really get attached to the plane I think we will go with the o540 STC.

Would have been easier if I had known about your 220C before you sold it!

Thanks for the compliment Asa, it is a great 10+ foot airplane!

Re: Stinson 108 Prebuy in BC

Was just poking around the rafters of the hangar. We have 4 doors in the rafters that we don't need. (you should be able to make 2 out of the 4) We have 2 sets of seats but not sure which set we want to keep for the project plane. Not sure if I'm ready to part with the seats yet, though .. Got a little bit of hoarder in me. The doors you can have, our project plane is going to be seaplane doors, so these are useless to us.

I did see a good set of aluminum wheel pants up in the rafters, that I'm never going to use (I prefer bigger tires, rather than wheel pants), but again, the hoarder in me, is having trouble parting with them. I do have a spare set of wings, that I'm not ready to part with, because I want to recover them, so that I can pull the wings off my plane, and just throw these ones on, which doesn't help you much, lol.

Yeah.. you're going to have to make a trip out here, once you solo, so I can check out your plane.

Mike

Re: Stinson 108 Prebuy in BC

Yes you did. Just started circuits yesterday.

Too bad you saw my touch and go

With a little practice I am still oping to solo next week. We'll see how it goes.

Looking forward to buying some parts from you! I'm going to try and get you to sell me those seat frames, full disclosure
