Stinson Ski Flying Video

Just had two great day of ski flying this week, thought I'd share some of the better clips..... It is filmed in HD but you have to go to the you tube page to get it to turn up to 720.

Are you using the GoPro? If so, how did you mount it? On the suction cup or one of the fixed mounts? (I recently got one and am playing around with it).

Re: Stinson Ski Flying Video

Hi Bob,
That was filmed with the GO Pro HD. I believe the powers that be frown on the use of the suction cup.

Now I would never do it this way, but I know a friend that uses the suction cup mount on an airplane.

He tested it a bunch on the windshield with it backed up by some high quality climbing rope that was in arms length. So if it broke loose he would be able to grab it from his window.

After many hours of testing with out any failures, he tried it on some spots further out on the wing, still tied off so that it could be grabbed and reeled in at flight or after landing. Currently he has used it for well over 10hrs without any failures. However he still is not quite 100% sure it will hold in all situations. Therefore he will never be setting it up without some type of backup.

It was then suggested that it be covered in foam, so that if it did cut loose it wouldn't beat up the plane. This mod is in progress, and should work well. It was set up so that the camera if loose on the end of the rope would not interfere with any flight controls nor beat up the plane, and just fly in the slipstream. It would have to be designed for each aircraft and in each filming location.

At least that's what he does.......

Have fun out there!

Nice video. Were the water bodies you did touch and gos on not safe for stopping on or were you trying to get as many shots as possible with the low sun angle. The shadow can help the pilot with height reference on a featureless lake. It looks good in the video too.

electricsnail: Looks like a great day of ski flying! Just like the last few days of fall flying, before winter hits, spring ski flying is the best!

I've been playing with the Drift, on a mount on the lift strut, but on a tube duct taped forward so it cuts the prop out of the picture, so far so good. I love the remote, and am still playing around with the editeding software (figuring it out in other words). It is snowing now, it ain't over yet!
