strong lapse rate morning

It was 34 degrees this AM and crystal clear, and I had a little flight down into the valley to take some pictures of the local flooding. I took off with 1800 prop RPM (about 4000 RPM with the Rotax 912) letting the grade on my runway help out, and then I had a 1000' to burn off immediately after liftoff so I went back to flight idle and floated on down into the valley. After taking the shots, I was flying up alongside one of the many ridges in the valley and to my surprise was getting some pretty good lift, like 300 FPM. This was a hillside that had been in the sun since dawn, but it was still only 10:30, way to early for thermals to be popping off. Not today though, lift was everywhere, and keeping the throttle at 1700 to 1800 prop, slowing to 38 to 42 mph and dropping one notch of flaps and working at it, I eventually got up to 8500' (from 4800'). Sure enough, up on top the upper ridge lines there were some backcountry skiers hitting the new snow from 2 days ago!

I have never seen it so "lifty" so early, smooth air too, so smooth I was hitting my own wake turbulence while circling, little puffy cumulous clouds were popping everywhere. I wrapped it up with a HELLO to a neighbor who was discing his fields,( ) and 3 or 4 hillside landings and then home, I never got more then a couple miles from my place. Total fuel burn 2.5 gallons and flight time of 1.3 hrs with a gain of about 4K feet. Once a hang glider pilot always one I guess :D

Ahh, the holy grail: Smooth lift. Like glass-off in the evening.

Alright, I'll bite. What in the hell were you flying? Airlines usually don't mention the outside temp.

Re: strong lapse rate morning

My neighbor and good friend has two private jets.... The smaller CJ-2 is the one we flew to Fla last week. The other bigger one can non stop it both ways very easily. This one can with light winds when we are headed west.... Unfortunately we had a fuel stop in Kansas so on this leg we flew at 43,000.. When you sit up front in these " magic carpets" the information that is displayed on all the screens is staggering to say the least. For instance, while decending into Jackson Hole and just passing over Dubios Wy @ 24,000 the computer showed a direct crosswind component out of the south of 109 kts. As you can imagine the next few miles of the decent was a little choppy as the wind was blowing over the tops of the Wind River and Gros Ventre range. I really love the low level stuff in my plane but to get the polar opposite feeling, riding up front heading east with a great tailwind at 45,000 and clicking off 10 miles a minute is what life is all about........... and watching the airlines on TCAS 2 miles below you is priceless.... [-o< [-o< 8) 8).

See all you guys at Johnson Creek in a few.

Ben.

Re: strong lapse rate morning

The last time I went any distance in a go fast was also with a guy from Jackson, the late John Horn, in his 340. We went to Oshkosh and back, the day we left it was socked in about 1500 up, and he showed me what a plane like that can really do as we blasted up, through and outa there, he was IFR rated of course. He put it on auto pilot about half way back and went to sleep, and I "flew" it the rest of the way, At some point it started getting bumpy, and he woke up and before even looking outside said "feels like we're back in Wyoming", and indeed we had barely crossed the border, good call!

Re: strong lapse rate morning

Just walked down the street to get the mail. It's 110 here in Surprise, Az, and light winds. On the way back a huge gust came up and blew debris all over. A minute later, I turned around and about 1/4 mile away and 300' off the ground was a patio umbrella, tumbling over and over, but not moving much. I went into the house and got the grandkids out to see it. The thing stayed more or less in the same place for several minutes. Must have been plenty of convection keeping that thing aloft.

Have fun at JC, all
