Stuck on an Island
Near misses, close calls, and lessons learned the hard way. Share with others so that they might avoid the same mistakes.
A friend of mine flies pipeline, usually in his 180, but for the last few weeks he's been using one of his Cubs. Saturday, I think it was Saturday, he landed on an island in the Salt Lake near the Promonotory Mountains. He promptly got stuck, first in the sand and then in the mud. He was there for about 22 hours. At one point he climbed to the top of the hill on the island where the cell phone worked. Later he finally gave up trying to get himself out and called on 121.5 and got some help. The airport manager at Ogden flew over in his Cub. Four or five other guys came out in a boat. Apparently some of those guys were taking pictures. If anybody knows anybody involved that has these pictures I'd sure like to get them. They really need to be blown up into 8x10's to be posted at the local watering hole.

Half a century spent proving “it is better to be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.”
