Suggestion to get more views/visibility for your TR's

Let's stop posting in "Where did you fly today?"

It's been an epic thread, longer than any other on this forum, but have you ever tried to find something specific in there? Unfortunately few have specified custom reply subject title so they're all "Where did you fly today?" making even a Google search useless.

I'd like to suggest making new threads for each of your trip reports, or doing like Evan and Oregonmaule have done and create your own running blog-like thread. The objective is better browsability/searchability.

Re: Suggestion for better trip report searching

No one seemed to pay much attention to this, so I'll rename the thread. :)

Lately some of you have started your own dedicated threads in forum/Trip Reports with the intent to treat them like a blog. I think this is a great approach. If we keep adding onto "Where did you fly today?" the old posts become more buried and less visible.

By doing the above, your running trip reports will get better views and be more easily searchable due to the unique subject title.

Also, the "SUBJECT" should be meta-data so people can search and retrieve threads with ease.

definition wrote:Metadata is data that describes other data. Meta is a prefix that in most information technology usages means "an underlying definition or description." Metadata summarizes basic information about data, which can make finding and working with particular instances of data easier.

Cryptically encoded "SUBJECT" will obscure threads forever.

Human readable but specific works best. We have no provision for adding or parsing meta data other than date or author. Let's not overcomplicate it :)

Yes you do. Meta can be anywhere. Just ask google.com.

Re: Suggestion to get more views/visibility for your TR's

I have to admit my eyes glaze over at your thread titles and they all begin to look the same with your date thing. We already have dates assigned to topics and posts, and google crawls and stores that without it being in the subject title.

Ultimately, Google shows the subject title as the search result title, which we as humans parse visually. Plain language works best for scanning through those results.

Some of the posts in "where did you fly today" are epics, or have a huge string of photos- I can see wanting them to go into a full-blown trip report. But what about a quick post and photo or two that doesn't really merit a stand-alone TR? Maybe you could close the original where did you fly thread, and start a few new ones based on which part of the country they take place in- west coast, east coast, middle America. That way it'd be easier to dredge up specific posts later. And / or whenever someone posts, they could put the destination or route in the title.

To be clear, this is only a suggestion, I'm not moderating anything. You guys can post your reports however you please.

But from the standpoint of a reader who enjoys consuming this content, I definitely prefer seeing you guys make your own threads and adding onto them like a blog.

Re: Suggestion to get more views/visibility for your TR's

Here is the main reason I made my own thread similar to OregonMaule.

Many times someone here posts a memorable picture or an awesome video, and then they go into the Where Did You Fly Today thread, or as I like to call it, the "basket." You guys know what the basket is right? Its that thing that you throw all of the mail into when you walk in the door. Or that toolbox you have that has all the random sockets in it that don't have matching brethren (And the one that you cuss every time you know the socket you need is in there but you have to dig to find it.) Or the drawer in the kitchen that has all the leftover bolts, screws, and keys in it.

They are the "catch all." And its damn near impossible to find what you are looking for when you want it.

The where did you fly today thread served its purpose and then some. Its time to let it go.....

I started mine because I wanted to be cool like Evan. :D

But mostly I got tired of having to "Previous Page" my way through the basket to find an old picture I liked. And I liked Fearless Leader's idea to start doing the blog-style threads. Also, I really like your analogy for the basket.

Is it possible to rename my last topic I posted about and use that as my trip report blog?

Yes. Edit button. It looks like a pencil icon. Change the subject title.

I'll comply with this if my mom every lets me do anything fun again...

Although, I suppose this mornings weather is the bigger impediment. 1.5 miles visibility in the mountains.

I had the same concern. Kind of like a FB post. Just a quick "Hey, check out what I did today." But, if it's preferred and not construed as self indulgent, I'll start one too. Thanks Zane!
