Well, I just developed an oil seepage on my prop. So maybe it's time to think about a prop overhaul or just replace the seal? My prop is kind of beat up anyway, but don't have much of a budget to do anything right away. So thought I'd take my time and do some investigation work.

The engine is pushing 1300 hrs since it's last overhaul (still all great compressions and runs very strong!!). I was hoping to wait to overhaul the engine and prop at the same time, but any suggestions would be appreciated.

I'd like to stay with the two blade prop, but Is there any kind of props I should consider? Is there such thing as a climb, seaplane or cruise prop for the 182?

Theres a Prop Shop somewhere up there in Boise that a lot of the Salt Lake guys use.... I would have it repaired/overhauled, whichever they say would be the best descision. Maybe less than a grand, maybe not. They come out looking new anyways.

Otherwise, that funny prop that "MTv" uses would be the bomb but an expensive bomb.

Yep thats them. I recall hearing good things about them. I wish we had a local prop shop. Keep us posted on what you decide. It looks like they are an MT dealer if you win the Idaho State Lottery in the meantime

call larry at flight resource he will hook you up with an MT that will out perform any other prop. besides why should e and MTV be the only ones riding around on light wallets?

I am looking for some advice. I still have the vibration in the 175. I haven't had the prop balanced yet because the compression was low in one cylinder. I wanted to run it hard with some chemicals in the oil since it had been sitting for 25+/_ years and do an oil test. I was afraid I might need to do a cylinder first. I lucked out and the compression came up in the cylinder from 58 to 76. Engine seems smoother now too.

Now I need to look to the prop for the cause of the vibration. I have a small amount of oil seeping on one blade and it feels more like Maple Syrup than oil. We can twist the blades by hand and they seem free but the vibration starts when I rotate the blades to a cruise setting. The engine runs smooth from 2,600 RPM up but if I run it any slower (using the prop pitch not the throttle) it starts vibrating. The lower the RPM, the more vibration. I was thinking that one blade is turning more than the other? Is that possible? I don't know what is inside of the hub. Is there any mechanical thing that would keep the blades at the same position or is it only oil pressure?

My mechanic wants me to have the prop done. It has been about 15 hrs and 25 years since it was done last. He is a little concerned because his cousin just had a blade come off his crop duster. His cousin is OK and was able to shut it down, dump the load and land.

I guess my next step is to pull it and have it gone through. Couple of questions. Do you guys know what it will cost to rebuild and can I replace the hub? What does a new (or used) hub cost? I have the one with the AD for the reoccurring 100 hr Eddy Current Check and I was thinking of getting rid of it. Any advice will be appreciated.

Last I checked, it'll cost you right around $5500 for an overhaul, assuming your blades are within spec. A new hub is spendy--about $3 to 4 K. If your blades are toast, you're better off looking for a used prop, I'd say, or buy new.

I'd be really leery of flying a prop that exhibits the symptoms you describe. You said you can TWIST the blades by hand?? That should be a clue if its true.

I'd get it overhauled, or at least torn down. There are actually quite a few of these props out there for sale in pretty good condition, so that might be the best way to go.

Thanks for the info MTV. My prop shouldn't have too much wrong with it other than seals and petrified grease and oil. When we moved the blades it was really hard to move them but they both did move.

I did talk to a guy at Precision Propellers in Boise. He said what I am seeing on the blade is probably grease from the bearings not oil. He said it sounds like one of the blades could be sticky and hanging up.

When I fly it to Boise, if I can get there early enough they can get it tore down, cleaned and "reseal" it in one day. They can do a static balance in the shop and a dynamic balance when they get it back on the plane for right around $550 for both the Reseal and Dynamic balance.

If that wasn't enough good news he said my Hartzel Prop AD has been changed to 100 hr only. Before you had to do it annually or 100 hrs whatever was first. I just did mine before the plane was delivered and I thought I was going to have to do it again with just a few hrs on it. He said a local guy had been working on his plane like I have and he ended up doing it after just 1.25 hrs because of the way the old AD read. I am just doing this for now and then I will start looking for the different hub so I can do away with the AD forever. An MT or 80" Hot Prop would be nice but it's all about money right now.
