Sunrise flight into Soldier bar

This has been my favorite strip in Idaho so far , lots of fun and being there for a while was just amazing.

Re: Sunrise flight into Soldier bar

Nice video, I love going into Soldier Bar. I have one critique for you. Next time after you land there keep your momentum going and don't stop until you get to the top of the strip. Stopping while going uphill on a dirt strip isn't the best idea. You have to use a lot of power to get going again and could suck a lot of dirt and rocks into your prop.

Re: Sunrise flight into Soldier bar

Rob The first landing I went all the way to the top,and did not stop, that is what you see in the video, I do the take off from the top, I go downhill super slow, the last half of the strip at the top is useless for a nose gear plane .too many bumps. I tought my prop was going to hit :)
Second landing where you see in the video I stopped I turned around and took off, it actually worked better, its the only relatively speaking smooth part of the strip

Re: Sunrise flight into Soldier bar

Moto Lost the first one so will try to start over.

Agree with Rob56 that you should keep up the momentum until up on the flat right portion.
The way some damage the tail is that they fear the length and so add full power just before the first drop.
Need to make a smooth modest drop off the first drop and add the power as the drop starts to roll relatively :"flat". I have watched guys put in most of the poser from the top - dam near do a two wheelie turn -
sort fly off - DROP off the top of the first dip and bang the last third or so of the tail. Trykes mostly.
They do not seem to have analyzed the field well enough to know that they can dimply fly off the end - best with a little ground effect and drop into the canyon if need more airspeed.
An approach can also be made in a full right hand pattern - you can keep the field in sight that way. Stay way left after cross over Taylor Ranch. Short final should pass pretty much near the same left side rock outcrop and trees. You also get to keep any visual wind conditions in view all the time. Runway originally ran about 90* to the current one just below the first - used to be - BIG hump. The first hump on landing used to be sharp and steep enough to launch a hot approach straight fore ward an near to or into the trees while the runway veered off to the right.

Hope you get to do my favorite which is Cabin Creek. Don't do it TOO early or the sun will give ya fits.
PS: Cabin Creek is one of the few where all rules of thumb about 50% speed at 70% runway will not work.
One you get nearly out of the trees you would play hell stopping before the Willows in the creek bottom.
Original Cabin Creek strip was in a hay field up and to the left of current strip. Current strip used to be quite a bit shorter. It is also the place - back when there was a "lodge"- that Robert Michum and crew filmed "The Trackd of The Cat" as I recall.

Nuff for now

PS: First time I have seen Bernard approached from your end.

It is better to be late in this world, than early in the next.

Re: Sunrise flight into Soldier bar

Bernard approach I followed Galens Hanselman Fly Idaho guide, land rwy 35, depart 17.No go around but an easy approach.
How is the usual approach?

As approaching Soldier Bar from the right, sounds like a fun one and will look into it next time I go.

I renamed it to myself "Soldier Motocross Bar" becuase of the amount of bumps (jumps :D )
Cabin Creek I also went there and I agree is a fun one and beautiful, went 4 times in 2 days so I must have liked it :)
Im editing a video of it.

I'm enjoying your videos very much. Great name for Soldier Bar. I also like reading the input from others. Definitely a place where you can feel the history. Waiting for Cabin Creek!

Re: Sunrise flight into Soldier bar

I put one of these thingies on my airplane, "just in case". I've never hit the tail/tie down ring on any airplane yet, but for $15, this is pretty cheap insurance. Haven't hit this, either. Takes maybe 2 minutes to install--unscrew the tie down ring, put this in place, screw the tie down ring tight again. You might consider it.

Re: Sunrise flight into Soldier bar

I owned a Tri-Champ that had Cary's thingy on the tail. Because it was a TW airplane with a nose gear strapped to the firewall, it was easy and normal to three point it on the mains and thingy.
