Yup, they did it in a couple years back. My A+P's hangar is there, but he works out of his truck now. Some still holding out hope it may be reopened one day.

I'm aware of two other good sized airports within the Sacramento area, also sacrificed within the last few years.
Fiddyment Field
Natomas Field

Well, no loss. Sacramento pilots and their families and anyone wanting to visit Sacramento should be flying coach on airline flights out of SMF, anyway. Remember to bring plenty of cash for the monopoly parking, arrive two hours early for security, bring less then 3 oz. of toothpaste or shampoo, and be prepared to drink your own breast milk. Take your shoes off and report to the TSA, they will treat you right. Your papers, please!

Naw, they just want us to use the fine facilities offered over at Mather, where with its 12000 foot runway a halfway competent pilot can get in 3 touch and goes to pattern altitude without ever turning crosswind. Oh, and their 100LL is only $6.96 gal - and the ramp fees are mandatory

The replacement airport we were promised when Sunset Sky Ranch closed down, Mustang Field, failed to get their public use permit this spring. After spending over what he claims is $1 million on environmental impact reports, and successfully getting the planning commission approval, Dick Bjelland got royally screwed by the Board of Supervisors that are in the pocket of the Nature Conservancy. By blocking his project, TNC in effect just added 160 acres to their preserve. Nothing like as a private citizen paying to have your land stolen from you.

Re: Sunset Sky Ranch

Well, f**k it. Guess I'll go into Exec and the rest can stuff their ramp fees.

Re: Sunset Sky Ranch

Thanks... It's a family deal at Elk Grove so Exec will do.

Exec used to be the place to be for fly-in fun when old friends lived at Fullertown.

Re: Sunset Sky Ranch

Don't be a transient aircraft with mechanical problems at Exec. I got a world class 'reaming' when I had a mag that had to be replaced there and they knew I probably would never be back. (and that made it so)
The mechanic on the ramp quoted me a high fee (2x what would have been UCR), but I knew I was over a barrel and said ok. I went to make the arrangements with the service manager and he doubled it on the spot, saying 'overtime labor' (when the mech had said no problem) and special shipping for the 'Slick' (I knew better based on the mech information). When I started to balk, he said 'take it or leave it' if you want it tomorrow.......
I took it...... boy did I take it! When you have no other choice/options, they gotcha!

That was 7 or so yrs ago before we had the internet to badmouth that sort of treatment on. I guess now it is a little late.....

Franklin (F72) might be a little closer, a lot deader. No one will bother you there that's for sure.

Re: Sunset Sky Ranch

My New ( 25 AUG 2011 ) A/FD still has Elk grove as open. They must have just done it in the last couple of days.
Airnav doesn't even show it closed yet.
I'm with you GUMP, WTFO?
