Re: Super Cub 40K?

Joel Milloway is extending the wings on the S7's he builds as I understand it. Good/bad, I don't know. Would like to try one out though. Love experimental!!!!

Re: Super Cub 40K?

He has a trick Hoerner type tip, the overall span remains the same, but the true airfoil carries all the way out to the tip, so best of both worlds, more effective span while no actual greater span. I had a pair, bought after my build, and was all set to rip fabric off and install them but ended up taking my beat up stock 'glas tips off and throwing them in the dumpster, saving 7 lbs. Then I weighed Joel's carbon ones and they were a few lbs less (these weights are approximate, I can't remember exactly, but it wasn't a pound or two, but less then ten), and then I sold his tips to someone still building thus easily ably to install, and put a fresh coat of Poly-Tone over my bow tips and called it good! Saved that weight, but yeah I'd use them if building new.

They can certainly keep up with a Cub, with mods, for less than the cost of a Cub overall.

I say "keep up with", not overtake.... but the few places a Cub can go, where a modded Pacer cannot, aren't places you regularly need to be.

Now, that right there is FUNNY!

I have a couple of friends who've gone that route and the LEAST cost I've heard from them is on the order of $110 K plus one hell of a lot of labor.

Good luck finding ANY kind of SC kit you could actually fly for $40 K

I know a fellow who built one from SCRATCH, meaning from plans, for about that......a remarkable accomplishment indeed, and a HUGE amount of work, scrounging for parts, lots of tools and expertise, a place to build, etc.

You are right Mike - although I would hasten to add, you can't have any other (comparable) brand new aeroplane for anywhere near the price of a completed homebuilt kitset, from what I have seen.

Expensive? yes.
Worth it? yes.
Get what you pay for, definitely.

No free lunch for all the above examples, more potential weight carrying capacity costs, but it's worth when or if you need it. That less then 30' span has made all the difference for me a few times, hell I wish it was narrower I'd have less scrapes on the tips!

Why keep a spare on your dually? It has two already. And ten-plies.

Re: Super Cub 40K?

A little thread drifting but, my idea of a "workhorse" is the Cessna and/or de Havillands.

Saltwater float flying is the hardest operation generally on an aircraft. The Cessna/Beaver line can out last most on floats. A 206 and Beaver, here in Hawaii, proves this pretty well.

But, I also saw a Beech 18 in Micronesia which had 25,000+ hours. It was flying off coral atolls for years and was stellar!

OK, back to 40K cubs ... (or let's say $150K airworthy) :D

"...The founder of the company, Pat Magie, has flown 39,000 accident free hours with about 32,000 hours in seaplanes--which now is probably the world's record. He was also named as the National Seaplane Pilot of the year in 2000. He flew as a bush pilot in Northern Minnesota, Canada and Alaska for many years flying fishermen, hunters, forest fire suppression and freight of all descriptions...."

He gave Wiplinger his check I was told, by Bob himself. Classic dude.

Super Cub 40K?

That's a pretty cool history!

I've always held a dream of building an experimental J-3 one of these days. Light light light light but with wing tanks so I can sit up front.

S-7 doesn't sound too shabby either.

Had a quick browse in barnstormers and found half a dozen Stinson 108s in the 30-50k range - tough aircraft and one of my favourite sleepers in the vintage/bush tailwheel sector.

Re: Super Cub 40K?

I learned to fly in a PA-11 and owned that plane (with a C90 motor) when I first started flying S-7s. I loved my -11, but there was no comparison between the two. The power to weight ratio in the S-7 with the 100hp Rotax is one of the best I've ever flown.

It's even more fun with 140hp turbo Rotax and slats, but you ain't gonna get one of those for $40k! ;)

Called about that one a while ago. It failed compression on 3 of 4.

Also ground looped with a poor "repair" job. Someone beat the frame straight with a hammer and slapped a coat of paint on it.

There is a 90hp and a 105hp PA-18 up here for under $50k. Neither currently have flaps, but I'm under the impression they are on the type certificate for the 105hp...

And, adding those flaps are going to drain another, what?...$12 to $15 K out of your bank account.

Or, you could do a full rebuild AND add the flaps and only be down $150 K.....

Re: Super Cub 40K?

FWIW, If the cub Kase is pointing at is the one referencing a current a recent experimental build, I can say that the owner is an experienced, knowledgeable cub guy and his 18 should be straight forward and turn key. He has built a cool one off experimental, as well as a J5 from a pile of parts. Maybe not a $100K cream puff, but I'd have no issues hoping in a cub of his and flying down to Arizona from Valdez.

Take care, Rob
