Re: I guess you can say I'm an owner now...

I just got home from moving the project over to my friend's shop / hangar. I got all the parts, hardware, and wings moved over. Still need to tow the fuselage over. Should've gotten it all over tonight, but the damned right wing rear bolt did not want to come out.

The pictures do look pretty good. It is dirty on the top. I'm going to wash it all this weekend to get all the dirt and bird doo off of it, and start going through all the parts. I'm amazed at how much new parts and hardware are still in their packages for this thing.

The dual brakes were put in just before it stopped flying, I've very happy to have those in there, and so is the guy that is going to give me insurance checkout in it.

Lots of cleaning to do this weekend. Also gonna pull all the interior out and clean it.

I got another connection for ya on the Franklin engines.
Greg Lucas dba, C. G. Lucas Co.

He used to work for Bruce
My buddy bought a plane from Bruce and the flywheel took a crap and metal went through the engine, filling the oil filter with metal. So, my buddy called Bruce, and Bruce recommended that He deal with Greg. My buddy felt that Greg had great knowledge on the Franklin engines, and was very pleased with his work. And I guess he also has a lot of engine parts.

Unfortunately Greg recently announced that he is out of the Franklin business. He sold all of his inventory to another guy (don't recall his name at the moment but I'm sure you can get it off the yahoo Stinson group) and is referring customers to him.

I bought 2 overhauled cylinders from him a few months ago!

Thanks Nate!

I just got home a bit ago from taking an expensive tour of Univair. But they did let me leave with a box full of parts for the Stinson

Re: I guess you can say I'm an owner now...

I guess I can join Tadpole and the rest of you guys in the ownership ranks (ok, its not the best backcountry plane, but you gotta start somewhere!)

I've been very fortunate the last week or so. I've spent the last several months trying to find out about planes and get my hands on one. Like many guys, I started on Barnstormers.com, but the guy who owns my flight school, Chris Georgas, http://pacificrimaviation.ca/ took me under his wing and started sending me to look at real planes. A lot of stars aligned, I came to know some very nice guys, and I now own a 1/4 share in a 1972 C-150L that doesn't get flown too much by the two other partners.

I've still got lots of flying to do before I get my ticket, but this should be a good plane to nail the basics down on before I end up with floats.

I'll try to get insurance and keys worked out tomorrow and get it up in the air. I hear it flies well.

Rob, when a pilot buys his first plane, he deserves his own thread. Go ahead an post your own so I can post the backcountry 150's video. :P

Can't go wrong with a classic bird like the 150. Very cool and fly the heck out of it. Congrats! =D>

Re: Tadpole's Stinson Project

It actually looks like some progress has been made for all the hours I've put in so far. Besides being really good at drilling out bad rivets, the right wingtip is repaired and reassembled. There are still a couple things I need to do before I can cover it up yet. My IA wasn't there today and I need his help with something. Time to start on the left wing, which requires quite a bit more work.

Re: Tadpole's Stinson Project

I got conned into typing up an update for something else and figured I should post it here as its got more details and photos. I hope the pictures show for you all.

I got the plane all washed up shortly after I got it towed over to my friend's hangar.

Image

I pulled the interior and brought it home to work with on days I didn't feel like running out to the hangar. The wood panels are in pretty good shape.

Image

The aft floorboard is trashed so I need to make a new one. Also brought all the parts to wet sand / polish home too...makes my wife happy when I can stay at home and still work on the plane.

I came across the original Voyager yoke plates and stuck those on for an updated panel shot. I don't like how the radio stack sticks out. I will eventually see about making it flush, seems to be some limits on how far back it can go though.

Image

It took some time to research what parts I lacked to start reassembling the wings, then I decided to buy a rivet gun and bucking bars as the squeezer a friend loaned me wasn't working so hot.

Finally reassembly started. My expertise at drilling out bad rivets grew faster than my expertise at driving good rivets, haha. I started with the right wing as it had the least amount of repairs to be done. This past Sunday I finished getting it all put together. This took much longer than I anticipated, but it really was because I had to study the drawings to see how to assemble it. I didn't have anything to compare it too, and since I didn't take it apart, I didn't know how it went together. Turns out some of the stuff had been incorrectly assembled in previous repairs. Now that it's done, I can use it as a reference for reassembling the left wingtip.

Image

Hoping to get out there this Sunday and Monday and make a pretty good dent in fixing up the left wing. My goal is to get the wings done so I can get them covered and painted before it gets too cold. But honestly, after they're painted, there's not much left to do. The thing I have to keep reminding myself is that my goal here is to repair and fly. I keep getting sidetracked by disassembling more and heading down the road of restoration...which I don't have the time or money for yet. The plane is really in great shape to begin with, so it'll still be nice with just my repairs.

I'm looking forward to getting it flying. The problem I'm going to have is that I'm really getting into this project stuff too. I might have to find something to build / repair after I get the Stinny up.

Re: Tadpole's Stinson Project

Looks great Jason!

Probably won't be able to do much with the radios, that's set up just like mine. You may be able to sink the xponder in deeper but the upper part of the stack is right in front of the control column. When you do go exploring to see if you have any excess clearance make sure that the flaps are deployed so that you get full elevator travel.

Looking forward to the next installment.

Pretty much what I had figured. I did a quick glance I was thinking control column was the restriction. And good tip on the flaps deployed, I had recently heard that on the Stinson Group. That wouldn't have dawned on me right away. The way the radios are in there now is solid, but it's not very attractive like the rest of the panel.
