Hey mate, Zac and Emmy happily wear Bose X headsets, the earcups are much smaller than most

Has your baby arrived?

Re: Taking 8 month old baby on first flight

Thanks for all the great info in this thread. It's pretty timely as the wife just asked when we were going to take our almost 4 month old boys up.

She even got a head start on me and ordered the Banz baby ear muffs.

Re: Taking 8 month old baby on first flight

My how times do change! When my kids were little, we had no intercom, no headsets--just the foam plugs. We learned to fly high (got rid of the "are we there yet?" questions), and on descent to just let them scream--as soon as their ears equalized, the screaming stopped, and as long as they really had no blockages, it was a good method of clearing their ears. Especially younger son, who would scream a the slightest ear pressure, cleared his quickly. Older son would bare the pain longer without hollering, so it was hard to tell if he had a problem or not. Talk about distractions!

For the Angel Flights I've done involving little tiny kids, the foam earplugs work well if the kids won't wear a headset. I have a kid headset (forget the brand), but some kids just don't like headsets, but they'll tolerate the earplugs. As kids get older and outgrow child seats, the CARES harness from KidsFlySafe works really well: http://kidsflysafe.com/. It's designed for single airliner seats, so I obtained some extra seatbelt webbing so that it will go around the entire 2-person seatback of my P172D.

Got my little man some ear protection. He doesn't seem to mind it, yet... =D>

Re: Taking 8 month old baby on first flight

Thanks to the motivation from this thread, we took our boys up yesterday. Safe to say they are future pilots. We ended up having them forward facing just so we could watch them on the first flight.

Re: Taking 8 month old baby on first flight

I followed the advise given on this forum and had a wonderful 2.9 hour round trip cross country flight with my wife and our 2 month old son.
The earmuffs used are Em's 4 Bubs, available on Amazon for a similar price point as the Baby Banz earmuffs. Both had positive reviews, but I went for the Em's 4 Bubs because I felt that the headband would be lower profile and interfere less with the head support on my son's infant seat. I fly a rented Cherokee 180, so climbing out is not a concern, but I just took my time on the descents and made sure my son was sucking on his pacifier to help him equalize his ears. We also took the advise to place his car seat forward facing to allow easier access. He didn't have any problems climbing or descending, and soon my wife and son both succumbed to the droning of that 180 Lycoming and I was on my own!

Awesome! I always smile when my wife falls asleep in the cockpit; can't imagine having all pax snoozing.

Re: Taking 8 month old baby on first flight

Awesome!

I sometimes make it a personal challenge to see if I can land without waking anyone up. If you've ever seen me fly, you'll appreciate the challenge therein.
It's surprising how many times I've parked, looked over and the whole plane's still asleep! :D

Taking 8 month old baby on first flight

You guys think the Baby Banz are the best earmuffs? They seem the most conventional like an adult headset, but I found some other brand called "Em's for Bubs" that appear to use an elastic headband and claim to be designed for infants.

Edit: Just reviewed LowTimePilot's post more closely and saw he used them.

I still think the ones we made are the best[emoji1]! You might just feel weird going into Babies R Us and buying nipple protectors!
