"Hurricane" Bob Hannah. Hero to a shitload of us young dirt bike riders many decades ago.

And ya know, as many races as he won, I bet he had as many equally spectacular crashes and bent bikes too!

Hell, Bob crashed. But, Bob gets up... Some of my buddies did not.

Re: Testing the gravel bar

With the 9 count it's long enough at sea level. Not sure about where you are though. Looks solid. I'd be more worried about pissin' off the homeowners.

Re: Testing the gravel bar

motoadve,

In the long run, if not in the short run, making rudder turns in ground effect will keep the wing out of the dirt and wires. The energy management return to target was good. Like Zane said, wires will kill you. You don't have a low wing, you are not sitting on the trailing edge well away from the engine and up high to see, you do not have wire cutters on the gear and windscreen, you are not in a steel tubing cage, and you do not have a cable between the cabin and the top of the vertical stabilizer.

I watched it and couldn't recognize the river. Guessed it was maybe the Snoqualmie near Duvall. ??
There are a lot of nice looking bars on the Skagit River upriver from I-5, being chickenshit I have yet to land on any of them but maybe one of these days...

I too would like to land on those bars on the Skagit. Just waiting to get some 8.50's for the 140.

Re: Testing the gravel bar

Just guestimating from time on the video it looks to be about 5-600 feet ish.

It does look soft. What kind of tracks are they?

I would get there and walk it first.
Go light minimal fuel!!!! except load something as far aft in your baggage as you can get it! aft CG will be your friend.
You want your nose as light as possible!
If you can catch a decent headwind that will also be a major help. Wait for the right day.

Then drag it!
Then drag it!
Then drag it!

Then decide if it's really something you want to do. :D

General rule of thumb is.... you don't want to make the News!

He knows how to fly that thing slow and now he's venturing into surface evaluation. Being conservative to avoid bending the plane is wise, but many of these river bars are buffed and smooth. Not a big deal. A bigger deal in my opinion is keeping your eyes peeled for wires and lines. Those are what really hurt people on the river.

Amen....

And so what if something gets tweaked. Fix it, learn from it, and try it again with a bit of newfound experience.

How is off-roading a Cessna or Super Cub that much different from rock crawling a Jeep, blasting across the desert on a sand rail, or pushing a personal limit while improving your motocross skills?

Can ya get hurt? Yeah.

Can you get killed? Yeah.

Can it be really expensive? Yeah.

Same risks as a lot of other fun stuff in life. Last I looked, BCP exists to promote this kind of flying and encourage folk to go out and learn some outside the box skills. Contrast here with the store clerk mentality on the AOPA forums.

I'd much rather be here.

PS: What was said earlier. Be the SECOND one in for your first trip to a new to you technical spot.

Different gravel bar than the one I tested , bit longer and smooth.
Had my buddy land it first in his 170.
