Did you fly somewhere cool, take photos, and feel like telling the tale to make us drool from the confines of our offices? Post them up!

Texas to North Carolina (anything interesting en route?)

Hey guys. A friend of mine and I will be making a trip from south Texas to North Carolina in February sometime. Wondering if anyone knows any cool places along this route. Things to see, cool strips, good eat stops, etc. anything at all. Nothing to minor to mention. Won't be in a big hurry. 180's w 29's so any grass would be great. :P

Your friend should try to visit Triple Tree in South Carolina to hone his short field landings on the 7000 x 400 ft grass strip  http://www.tripletreeaerodrome.com/

What is the final destination in NC? If it is near the coast, it would be worth flying the outer banks and possibly even landing at Kitty Hawk KFFA.

Not yet Marty. But getting close. Firewall forwards done. Pretty much going through it with a fine tooth comb. Putting lots of stuff on it from my other plane as well. Getting pretty anxious. A buddy of mine is going to fly me out and well be 2 ship back. Should b a fun trip. Thanks again for the prop and your help getting it there!
We will be going to the west coast close to to cherry point. Will hit kitty hill and there's a place out there I went a few years ago that a cool restaraunt will come get you at the airport. It's close to the beach as well.

Re: Texas to North Carolina (anything interesting en route?)

Just wanted to refresh this in case. Getting closer to time. This is why I envy you west half of the country guys. If I asked that question going west instead of east I wouldn't have enough time to stop at all the places. :P So much cool stuff out there. Sometimes I wonder why I live down here. Except for the weather, hunting, fishing, and hot women. if any body knows of a cool place for a crop duster to work let me know. Although cool places and crops don't usually live close to each other.

i must have missed this one in the first place. lets see. go to KJQF to see all the nascar guys airplanes including jack roush's P51 "gentleman jim" and a couple of T6 Texans. lots of activity there. KCLT has an aviation museum including sullys airbus and a bunch of other stuff. KHBI has a pretty cool aviation museum as well. Lots of old airplanes there. KUKF has the MX factory. lots of cool aerobatic airplanes there. If you want to stop by my mechanics shop at KBUY and visit Bully Aero, hes rebuilding Rob Hollands airplanes right now. Cool guy and knows everything about taildraggers, fabric, and aerobatic stuff. Dont go to any of the controlled airports. Gas prices are horrible. Theres a couple stops. Ill go fly with you if you stop by KBUY, but my PA22/20 might not keep up.

Not sure how far east you're going, but Ocracoke Island may be worth visiting. As someone else mentioned, First Flight Airport is also a necessary pilgrimage if you are out to the coast and it's close to Okracoke Island. You can park at their ramp and walk up to the Wright bros. monument.

Re: Texas to North Carolina (anything interesting en route?)

I just got word the I am relocating to the Moorsville area of North Carolina, big change for me. I am used to flying float planes around New England and up into Northern Quebec. Please keep posting info on North Carolina and give me places to check out. I look forward to meeting fellow pilots in my new area. I will be down in a month or two and my family will be down mid June.

Did my IFR a few years ago in Goldsboro, home of Woods Aviation. Those guys are legendary. Worth a visit.

If you go to Triple Tree Aerodrome might wanna stop by KSPA. It's an old airport but with a newly remodeled terminal. The walls have tons of old pictures of the airport. Lindberg visited and a good chunk of the town turned out.. lot of pictures of that in the late 20's. You can also walk up a few flights to the old air traffic control tower(not used anymore but remodeled anyway)....great view of the area. Watch out for the sailplane traffic.

Morsville is pretty close to lake Norman, which is a good size lake that I am sure you could land in. There is a airpark located on Norman also. Let me know when you get here I am only a couple hours from that area less if I fly.

Hmmm. Looks like well definitely be stopping at bay minette. Even if it is a few 100 miles out of the way. :P They seem to appear very professional.

Well... 3 months later and I'm finally going to get my bird tomorrow. Been a long time coming. Ole scaly wag set me back a few weeks. :P 4 months without it and missed most all of the good flying weather down here but I'm stoked. Be leaving in the morning in a 206 and bringing my girl home Friday or Saturday if all goes well. Thanks for all the advice on things to see or do. If anyone else thinks of something or is along the route drop me a note.

Your advice will depend on whether you are a tarhole fan or a pack fan... Which is it? Don't say dook.
