Have you modified your aircraft? STC? STOL Kit? Major rebuild from just a data plate?

I lost a bunch cleaning up the panel. Old ADF radios are heavy.

Odyssey battery takes off 8 to 10 pounds, and cranks better.

Lots of lightweight accessories out there these days....starters, alternators, oil coolers.

We took an average of 40 pounds off our Super Cubs by this route....that's huge.

Re: The best ways I lightened my airplane were...

My EarthX battery saved me 11 lbs over the Odyssey. One winter with it now, and very strong cranking with zero problems.

Simple panel, extremely basic and all I need for my flying, no transponder, artificial horizon etc. etc.

I'm next looking at getting a Catto prop for the 912S that is 1.5 lbs lighter then the current lightweight champ, the Kiev.

Took out the overhead cabin speaker. It was a brick of a thing with a huge magnet.

Thought about removing the overhead speaker, but isnt the stall warning using that speaker to give the alarm?

Not in a 170B. YMMV.
Anyway, there's bound to be lighter options out there now than when some of these birds were built. And mine had previously been replaced by a speaker that said "Ford" on it- that certainly didn't help!

In 2010 I got rid of 155lbs off the right seat, cost about $750,000  , most expensive weight reduction on my airplane ever, But worth it!! =D>

Re: The best ways I lightened my airplane were...

This thread can stay interesting if we continue with the mechanical part of losing weight. We as pilots all know don't eat donuts and bacon. For me I'm rebuilding my champ that my dad bought in 1961. The only thing I plan on adding over stock is a shoulder harness.

Replaced Whelen Nav/strobes with AVEO Ultra Galacticas - 2 lb strobe power supply per wing...gone
Replaced Hartzell with MT - Lost 26 lbs off the nose
New Skytec starter
New PlanePower alternator
Atlee Dodge Seats - that bench seat was a beast - lost almost 20 lbs there

Re: The best ways I lightened my airplane were...

One of the things I like about this site are the different types of aircraft represented here. Every now and then I get thrown for a loop, like in this thread, when the issue of cabin speakers came up. The thought of a light LSA type bird even having a cabin speaker, and whether or not the stall horn (and whats that??!) squawks through it and it may be a good idea to remove it, cracks me up  Whats next, removing the ashtrays? I am NOT knocking the older certified birds... not at all, just pointing out the great variety of aircraft represented here makes it entertaining and educational. I do know I have lightening holes drilled in my S-7 that no other S-7 builders bothered with, but every time I see them I have a warm fuzz feeling that I know I did all I could to keep it light. This Oratex fabric process, being lighter overall, is driving me crazy, I am almost wishing I'd have a non injurious wreck so I could get to recover the wings and fuselage, it has got me thinking of building again, just to use it. Light is right.

Good one M6RV6!

You bring up a good point Tom. I did remove the 4 ashtrays from my 170 and they are heavier than they look!

Re: The best ways I lightened my airplane were...

Courierguy,

I'm glad you mentioned the ASHTRAYS. I did remove mine and I'm not kidding when I say that the front seat ones weighed almost 1lb each. I took the tray portion out of the backseat ones and turned those into headset jacks. They were only 1/2 lb each.

I also removed the straps on the door jambs. Mine were made out of heavy rope with a monkey fist type of knot on the ends, covered partially with vinyl, and had funky attaching hardware. 3 lbs!
