The Buzzard is dead......

Well, the final verdict came in on the ground loop damage. The estimate to repair was about 42K. That didn't include what might be found after the prop strike tear down on the engine with about 1500 hours. Since it was an 0360 A1A hollow crank......I just sniffled and signed it over to the insurance company as a total.......At least I came out on it well enough to be shopping for another bird.

Looking at a 182J right now with the 206 nose fork, <3000 TT, about 500 SMOH, and 1100 SPOH. Cool digital avionics too(Apollo SL60 gps/com driving an Apollo MX20 MFD, and an Apollo digital transponder), extended fuel. I just may be flying in the backcountry up here in a trike cuz the price is right. I can run a 7.50 on the nose and 8.00's on the mains to land on the beaches......8.50's all the way around with a Landes fork.

While I am happy with the way things turned out with the insurance. I am sure gonna miss the ole girl. For those that don't know what the buzzard was, it was a C172 Taildragger, Avcon 0360 conversion. See the avatar.

You're gonna like that MX20. I got real spoiled using it with first generation Capstone in our work airplanes. Magic stuff.

Did not know a 7.50 x 6 was even made. A 7.00 is pretty close on an early 206 fork. Maybe the forged fork has more clearance.

Tim, I'm going from what my IA told me about the 7.50. Looking at the 206 fork though, I imagine it would be a very tight squeeze for a 7.50. I think the mains on the bird I'm buying already have 8.00's on them. That would equal either a 6.50 or a 7.00 on the nose and 8.00's on the mains.

And different size tires like that brings up an interesting issue from the standpoint that, I have several ppl I know that have tried to put 8.00's on their 172. They each reported that FSDO would not approve it unless they were able to put them all the way around on a trike and also submit paperwork proving that the new arrangement would keep the floor somewhat level. I realize we're talking about a 182 here, rather than a 172, but I have to wonder why the inconsistency.....if there is one. Maybe I'm just displaying my ignorance about 182's...

Well AK,
Even though you decided on something that could be insured, find parts for and was readily available. When we have a Northern get-together, nobody will give you (too) bad a time about the training wheel up front.
Sorry to hear about the demise of that really pretty 170 but it happens.
I had dinner with UP-M5 the other night and we're all pretty jazzed about maybe having a gravel bar fly-in, camp-out, fishing, BS-ing session. Ryan had some great ideas. We'll let you and everyone else know when and where. We're thinking about during the Silver run as they're so much fun. And yes Roger, we'll make it float friendly.
I trust the new steed will be allowed to have recently dead fish in it?
Looking forward to making your aquaintence.
Congratulations!

Well, the buzzard humbled me significantly with that ground loop....., no, scared the crap out of me is more like it. Things went to hell in a handbasket extremely quick is all I can say. I went from trying to compensate and go around to along for the ride in what seemed like a split second. Maybe it's best for me to have training wheels for a while. That way my butt will stay behind me and not try to pass me......lol. At least the trike will have 2 8.00's on it and a big bird fork.....lol. We started a detailed prepurchase/annual on it today.....found one bad cylinder (55/80 which later proved to be cracked) and 5 good ones (70/80 or better). Seller is replacing the cylinder with a new one.

As far as fishing, the Silver run on the Tsiu river is outstanding. Unfortunately it usually occurs in September and it's probably somewhat remote for most folks. Still, there is one heck of a beach to land on and a good bit of room to do it.....just no services for those that might want em......just other pilots, fishermen, and brown bears.
