The EAA/AOPA waiver proposal letter

I have just sent the following letter to my chosen GOP primary candidate:

EAA/AOPA (Experimental Aircraft Association/Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association) intend to propose a request for waver of current FAA rules regarding the Class III medical requirement for rated pilots flying recreationally in aircraft certified beyond the current limits established by the Light Sport Category rule. This proposal will be delivered to the FAA early in 2012. The proposal, if approved, will allow pilots to medically self certify provided they have in their possession a state motor vehicle drivers license. They will also be required to obtain training through third party instruction to enable them, with the help of their own physician, to make sound judgements regarding their capacity to fly safely. Current statistical experience indicates that any connection between medical incapacitation and accident involvement for this class of flying is virtually non existent. The FAA has, for more than twenty years resisted all attempts to amend or eliminate the class III medical requirement for rated pilots exercising their privileges non-commercially. Some believe this resistance to change in the face of clear evidence contrary to the need for the class III, is something resembling a "turf battle". In the mean time, many well qualified pilots, including private, commercial, military and airline transport rated pilots are caught up in a morass of perhaps well intentioned but ultimately meaningless medical regulations. At the same time, the AOPA and other pilot organizations estimate that something on the order of 55,000 general aviation aircraft remain under utilized or abandoned due to these clearly out dated medical standards. An entire industry, formerly indicative of American Exceptionalism, is in a shambles. I would very much like to see Speaker Gingrich develop a position paper on this topic for distribution to members of AOPA and EAA.

I'm of the opinion that the third class medical discourages people from treating conditions that may make them safer to fly.
