The Hunt for 928 (1967 A-12 crash)

Just finished this enjoyable read about a guy spending more than two years searching for this illusive spy plane A-12 crash site in the vastness of NV. Grab a cup of coffee/mug of beer and enjoy:

Great story! I ran onto that a couple of years ago, and I enjoyed reading it again.

He mentions an airstrip that he found in the area. I think it might be this one: 37.2660, -114.3845

This is a great attitude. I'll finish tomorrow.

Re: The Hunt for 928 (1967 A-12 crash)

Many years ago(1970 approx) I went on a fishing trip to Mexico ,I was talking to Pete Taylor's dad .He explained that on there 1/2 million acre cattle ranch near Elko ,NV. there was a crash in approx. late 1960's of a Blackbird Jet. The Air-force /??? came to his ranch and cordoned off a large pasture .The authorities dug out the pasture very deep, size of football field and trucked off the dirt /debris -replaced with many dump trucks of "clean dirt" complete with bushes and small trees .

I truly admire this guys ambition and determination. He just doesn't quit.

I wasted more sleeping hours reading this one last night. A very good read about Death Valley NP, search and rescue, many miles of hiking, and 4 lost Germans 17 years ago. Talk about an adventure!

I've never been to Death Valley NP, but it sure makes me want to see it for myself to appreciate just how remote the area is. (Chicken Strip is on the to do list.)

Re: The Hunt for 928 (1967 A-12 crash)

Thanks Matt....

Great stories, both of them!

Yesterday evening I couldn't turn away from the computer it was so interesting.
Lived in Nevada a couple of years,... had the front transmission seal blow out on the truck in Death Valley. (Daylight Pass Rd West of Beatty). Cost $552.50 to get towed back to Nellis, that's with the AAA discount.
That place is no joke.

Anyway, the writer has a very real and descriptive way he illustrates the terrain and exposures one faces there.
Its well worth the time reading his misadventures.
If you go places like that.... Be prepared!

One of the reasons why I moved to the vast desert wastelands of Nevada.... Damn good place to wander, and you never know what you'll find...

I just finished the story on the lost Germans. What a tale! Sad too. I'm just amazed by both these stories and how hard this guy works at what is essentially a hobby. The hunt for Fossett (sp?) cost a thousand times what's been expended on this search I reckon. Seems to me that they ought to just hire this guy and get it done.

Re: The Hunt for 928 (1967 A-12 crash)

This story has a way it draws the reader to want to read-on or more! The mystery of how and where it ended-up and the determination of finding it! I have seen these Blackbirds in action, air-to-air, they disappear fast after there refueling, when "center" ATC clears them through FL 600!! Great reading Matt!

.....ATC said......"Cleared to climb to and maintain in excess of flight level Six Zero Zero." Kaboom... and he was gone. No postive control above 60,000 ft. =D>

Another pilot told me of hearing an aircraft request FL600! Supposedly Center replied "If you can get there, you can have it!"
The reply was "Roger, Aspen XXX leaving FL800 for FL600"!

Re: The Hunt for 928 (1967 A-12 crash)

Enjoyed Tom's story. Thanks for the post. After spending much time, in my younger days, exploring the Great Basin (and getting paid to do it!), I can appreciate his trials and tribulations with ground vehicles. The distances and travel times to the remote sites on unimproved roads are great. One of the reasons that pushed me to get my pilots license. I love viewing the desert landforms from the air at 135 knots and thinking how many hours, or days, of driving it would take to get to the same place.
