The RAF does it again. Great kudos to all involved.

The Recreational Aviation Foundation (RAF) has been working for several years to re-open North Fox Island airstrip, located on a state-owned 820-acre island in Lake Michigan.

Many volunteer man hours have gone into preparation and negotiations in order to reclaim and return the airstrip to a safe condition. North Fox Island is approximately 27 miles northwest of Charlevoix. The 3,000-foot turf runway has displaced thresholds with 60-foot trees on both ends and along the sides. It is now open to the public and will appear on the chart as 6Y3.

Sounds like a good win. I was looking at it on the map, and that's a lot of open water :O

Half a century spent proving “it is better to be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.”

Another win for backcountry flying and general aviation! It is always good to see airstrips being saved and taken care of by a passionate group of people! Way to go RAF!

That is one of the top 10 cool places I've seen.

I'd be all over that one.

North Fox Island, 6Y3

We flew yesterday to the island - it is absolutely beautyfull and surrounded by a lot of water. It was quite an experience flying there!

Doing a little internet searching regarding the emergency landing strip at the mouth of the Two Hearted River in Luce county in the upper peninsula of Michigan I found were the RAF was asking to reopen that to the public also. Hope it works out, nice camp ground and Lake Superior a quarter mile walk away.

Great video and pictures! This one is on my list for sure! I have been wanting to take a trip up to the UP and hit the Lake Superior shoreline as well. Thanks for posting.

Awesome. The RAF is the best. I wish we could get some more stuff opened up here in Colorado.
