Interesting question. Take a look at Gump's now famous landing. That was pretty intense, arguably about as intense as it could get as he can't be more than an inch or so from hitting the rim. Now look at the tire where this mud flap would be mounted. Even in that landing the tire at that spot looks pretty much the same as always. In particular, there doesn't seem to be any distortion causing the sidewalls to expand.

Further in the photo of the mudflap, it looks like the mounts for rubber are considerably back from the edge where the circumference would change due to centrifugal force.

I've explained in some detail to my rancher neighbors, in an effort to encourage proper fencing, how problematic it is getting cow shit off the bottom of the wing. Fresh cow shit, (or is that a oxymoron) and with a garden hose handy, not so bad. Well dried, and at least on my PolyTone surface, it takes fingernails. Maybe those super glossy paint jobs handle it better? My neighbors seem to be amused by this, and mention something called "open range".

I like those flaps, not sure how they work in some conditions.

I have no idea what video you're talking about, but whatever it is I'm eager to see it now.

I think he might have Gump mixed up with Orygon Maule, There both pretty Ugly so might be hard to tell apart, just one flys a Cessna and the other a Maule They both have the same kinda attitude also

The tire bulge at the bottom rotates around the tire some, how far depends on the tire speed.
On Don's Stinson the brake caliper was mounted aft of the axle and rubbed his 8.50 tires. Moved the caliper forward of the axel and no more rubbing.

Rw2, despite the Gump <> OregonMaule mix-up, I think you've made a good observation in that post.

The metal rod looks to be a good few inches or more clear of the tire, based on the location of bolts and AN970 washers. The rest of the gap looks to be rubber mudflap just hanging in there, which would give as the Airstreak flexed. This is a good observation rw2.
I guess that allows for the movement you're talking about Z?

The "mudflap" will not keep the wings clean of cowshit but it will help somewhat and will also stop stone damage to the tail plane. The "mudguard" will stop everything but will loose you 2-3 knots and are not approved. Despite that we had them on for 20 years with good results, apart from the small speed loss, which we could live with. Tyres are 8:50's

What paperwork was done for this mud flap? I'd like to fabricate and add something like this to my rig.

I'm gettin some!!

After my camping trip to Mexican Mountain a few weeks ago, I came home to find another good ding in my horizontal stab. Much deeper than the last one. I know it's part of the price of where we play, but I just don't recall seeing a lot of this kind of damage on other planes at fly-ins.

So I was starting to wonder what can be done about it outside of the one expensive STC that is out there.
