Re: Things My Wife Says

My wife often asks me if I can take the kids out of the house for a while, which I'm eager to do. After we get to the airport, either my 2 y.o. daughter or 3 y.o. son invariably beg me to take them flying. Of course I can't turn them down!

As long as the Stinson provides such a great diversion for the kids, I suspect it'll remain part of the family... :D

Also there was some missing paper work we were trying to find or work around. One of the major 337s missing was the Carry Through Assembly for the wing.
I think we are just about there though. [-o<
I had to import my wife too and it took about 5 years to do that.

I did my TW training at Andover as well. Damian was a great instructor and the field is as beautiful as any I've flown into. You're in a playground there - Van Sant, Trinca, Andover, etc. When I'm back east I fly out of Hackettstown, love the area!

Re: Things My Wife Says

Capitalism is a great system though sometimes markets are frustrating. My wife is my only source of comfort and understanding in those moments. We probably don't give our wives enough credit for understanding the way the business world works.

One day I had just missed an opportunity to sell corn at the top of the market by waiting one day too long for it to go higher. The Chinese had just raised interest rates causing the drop in the market. Since corn was now lower I was explaining the missed opportunity cost to her by not having sold earlier as an example of how much money I could have had. It was almost like having lost that amount of money. She then let me know she understood the concept of opportunity cost. She said she once lost an enormous amount of money like that too. We normally discuss everything in our business so this came as a total surprise to me since this was the first time she had ever mentioned it. When I pressed her for more details she just said, " Look how much money I lost. I could have married better."

I agree with OBX, airplanes are not wives because your allowed to fly as many as you want to find the right one. Choose wisely but choose. Don't delay a commitment to try, buy and fly. Your first airplane will lead you to the next airplane and the next in the circle of flying. Nobody starts at the top so dive in!

Bur remember they do have a lot in common, most good and a few otherwise . . . women and airplanes. I've known good people who've come to a tragic end by not making wise choices about one or the other. So as Baddog says, choose wisely. And if you make a wrong choice, it's probably best to bail sooner than later.

I see one problem with this. You can't build an RV8 in "one day". LOL

That's not entirely true.......................
I have attended airshows/fly ins where there were " builders" who sat under the wings of their experimentals claiming they 'built ' it and then won awards for their hard work. Most of those BS artists just used a check book to " build it". One I remember clearly was right here in Wyoming. The judges came by during the judging and asked this guy how many quarts of oil his plane held.. The SOB didn't even know how to open the access door on the cowling to read the dipstick. The judges and I exchanged glances and held back our grins.... It was PRICELESS..............

Re: Things My Wife Says

Since it's "Things" my Wife Says I'm assuming it's ok to post another.

Same Wife, different day. She was at work.

Haven't bought a professional aerial photo of our farm for years. The salesman came around one day with a not too bad photo of the farm. Finally, one that wasn't taken when it's all turned brown in late summer. So I decided to look it over for other reasons not to buy it.

ˇToo bad I haven't fixed the tin that blew off the barn roof," I said, "looks terrible."

"But the latest thing out is digital photography" he says. And he opened his laptop. Up popped my farm and he photo shopped a piece of good tin and fixed the hole in the barn roof.

So I came back with, "If I'd have just closed the door on the machine shed it wouldn't a been too bad a picture."

Then he slid over a section of door from my hangar and covered the open door.
"How's that", he goes."

I had to say it did look pretty good but I had one more ace because there was an entire building I've been meaning to tear down and fixing the machine shed door and the hole in the barn roof, it just stood out all the more.
But, he removed the building and put some grass over the spot.

Man, this a good looking farm I thought and I bought a picture for us and one for each of the kids.

My wife was home the day they came in the mail, opened them up and said, "Why didn't you just take a picture of somebody else's farm. Ours never looks that good."

We did HiC. That's when we met you and Ed. It certainly did help too.
So here's the clincher.
On the way back, with the wind blowin' like we were still in Laramie, we tried landing at Valentine, Neb. for fuel. Where the quartering, right cross wind drops down the river bank then rolls back up on to the airfield. You know, the same kind we all had on landing back at Sidney. That 22 gusting to 30+ caught us just as the wheels touched. Even with the wing low, it blew the plane sideways off the field into the grass and with us now sliding to the left, not quite a touch down and not weather vaning us either. Throttle went in, I pulled the flaps and was suddenly back in the air and pointed into the wind. It was quiet for a very long time. I just continued on to Gregory, SD and found a grass runway that was more into the wind. I was wondering if my wife would even get back into the plane when she said," I didn't realize you were that good a pilot that you could recover from a blast like that. I feel a lot better about flying now." She's a keeper.

We came home and made three more trips together this summer and they all went well. I apologize if I told this story before. But it's worth telling.

So thanks for everything again HiC.
