Thinking of building a hangar-Best size-more questions

I am considering a new hangar. I am currently in a 40 by 40 and it is fine for my 182. I have heard that there is a stol kit for a 182 that adds to the wing span. I have Sportsman and am not planning on any other Stol lit fut for resale I want to build the hangar to accommodate a plane with that kit.

So what is that STOL kit and what is the wing span

Re: Thinking of building a hangar-how wide

Wingx extensions add about 3 feet of total wingspan.

Re: Thinking of building a hangar-how wide

Here are the heights on Wipline floats. Other brands are very close in height. Having built a few hangars, the size is all relative to the NEED. WANT is an entirely different conversation. I would love to have a 80x60 hangar, but really only need a 50x50. At the end of the day, I will fill up whatever size hangar I have with all my shit. Bigger hangar=more shit!

Re: Thinking of building a hangar-how wide

Looks like the best for me is a 50 x 50 with a door 44 feet wide with a clear open height of 14 feet. Thanks

Re: Thinking of building a hangar-how wide

No matter how big you build it, it should be just a tad bigger! I was in a 50x50 in WA, moved back home and built a 60x60, and wish it was 100x100.

Has anybody used a Horton stack door http://www.hortonstackdoor.com/ You get a higher opening without increasing the height of the building

Re: Thinking of building a hangar-how wide

My hangar is 50x56 with 14' opening. Definitely try to get a hyrdoswing if you are on amphibs. I have a bifold and I planned it for an amphib plane. Specifically a Murphy Rebel. The opening is 11.6' I believe which gives me enough. My next hangar will have a hyrdoswing type.

Re: Thinking of building a hangar-how wide now what door

I would like to find a hangar with the Horton Stack door to check it out to see if I like it.

Any door with a track is going to be a major pain in the butt if there’s snow or ice. Perfect in Southern Arizona. Hydroswing isn’t all that handy in snow country either, that’s what we have. Bifold is the lesser of the evils in my opinion. Build a 16’ sidewall and a bifold will be fine for an amphib.

Re: Thinking of building a hangar-how wide now what door

I think your 50'x50'x14' would be great 95+% of the time. I had a 65'x60' in Durango and that was great, but I'm sure that would be a lot more money. I'm sure you''ll have a man door on the side and an overhead door on the opposite end would be very handy too. I've had the Schweiss doors on most of my hangars and they are very nice. Seems that many prefer cables for opening the door vs. straps,?? I've had problems with straps but pretty easily fixed when you are setting up the door. With the height you'll have it will be pretty easy to have an upper level in the rear of it and that does,' cost much and is very handy.

If you want to go up, pull back on the controls. If you want to go down, pull back farther.

I like higher power doors. They are hydraulically actuated, but lift straight up before they start to swing so they miss the snow drift in front. They also pretty much balance their weight on the door jambs. They don’t hang too far out the front and pull out on the front wall. They seal nice. Catch less wind than a hydro swing door.

Nice hybrid of a hydraulic and bifold.

We have these at work and they are great. Since the last foot of the door closing (or first of it opening) is pure vertical, it misses snow, but it also makes it where it essentially fully locks the door up against the wall mechanically, not hydraulically. Has a tab that catches the door as it comes down so nothing (wind, etc) can bring the bottom of the door away from the building once closed. Very nice.

Amen!!! I'm really happy (and have been for the past 22 years) with my HiFold door. It goes up and gives extra clearance. I've opened it in -40 and with a couple feet of snow in front of it, and never a problem.

Re: Thinking of building a hangar-how wide now what door

!00% agree! I will never have a tracked type hangar anywhere there is snow or even blowing sand/dirt. I kept my floatplane at a seaplane base ina qounset type hangar that had tracked doors. Those things were a PITA!! when everthing was adjusted right and there was no crap in the tracks, it worked great.

My hangar at home has a bi-fold and I've never had any issues with it, even in deep snow, other than the occassional freezing down to the ground. That is rare though as there is sand up to the edge of the hangar and it drains well enough that when the sun warms the snow, it just melts into the ground before freezing.

My hangar in town, which faces south is a constant problem in the winter. Sun warms up the door and causes the snow to melt and refreeze. I have had as much as 4-6" of solid ice freezng it to the ground. I chiseled it out once this winter when it was 2-3" thick in preperation for a flight. bad storms moved in and it ended up being frozen in even worse! The ice was 2" over the top of the rubber seal on the bottom edge of the door. The ice was even pn the inside of the seal. Needless to say, the door wasn't opened again until a sunny day when I was able to get it all chiseled out. I'm starting to realize the winter flying is a young guys passion!! :)

I hadn't seen the Hipower door previously, but I relly like the idea. Might be my next hangar door!

I have put up 3 hangars over the years, these are my thoughts; I like hydraulic doors, more head space, no cables or straps to deal with. I am currently am using a Schweiss hydraulic door on my float plane hangar (I am sure there are other good ones). With Schweiss there is the option of having a self supporting frame for the door, it eliminates having to beef the building up to accomadate the door weight, this is the route I would go. I have 48' wide doors on two of my hangars, it gives you more wiggle room, especially with Wingex extentions on your 182. I would suggest going with 16' sidewalls, more headroom at the door and also more room to lift up a plane to change floats to wheels/skis, with this in mind, modify the structure in the building plans as needed to accomodate a place to mount a winch to lift the plane. Other things to consider are to build it a little bigger to accomodate a second plane, for you, or possibly a renter, does not take much extra space to cram another plane or two in. Thinking ahead, for possible re-sale, the wider door and heigth will open up more potential buyers in the future, for not that much more money. Good luck on whatever you decide.

Re: Thinking of building a hangar-Best size

So size maters. Torn between a 60x40 (2400 Sq ft) or 50x50 (2500 sq ft) If planes parked at an angle can you get two high wings in and pull one out without moving the other with 60 foot hangar

52' wide can get 2 high wings in on an angle if one if a 182 and the other a 150. 60' should allow it easy with 2 182s.

Make one a tail dragger, the Champ tail fit nicely under the 182 wing!
