Tie Downs For High Sierra

Which ones seem to work best on the dry lake?

Flyties. www.flyties.com Small and compact to pack away. Yet they hold up to 50 knot winds. Don't forget to bring a hammer.

For my Flyties, I use as a hammer an old Vaughn drywall hatchet, with the serrated striking head. I had the blade professionally sharpened, so now it's still a good hammer but also a good camp hatchet. I tried a couple different hatchets first but they made crappy hammers, this one swings and strikes like a good hammer should, old carpenter here so pickier then most.

I'm really sorry but I think all those systems are marginal at best.

For the windstorm in 2017 I had two 18' lengths of rebar on each side, but more importantly had the plane orientated to take the wind from an aft quarter. Nothing moved but last year I took two 24" lengths of angle iron with an eye welded on the end. Hammered in with an axe, I had to dig them out. The desert allows you to just keep driving them in. I used a 5lb axe.

You are really not going to care how slick they look or how light they are when your plane is tumbling down the playa.

My 2c.

Re: Tie Downs For High Sierra

My plan is to use 18" lag bolts with a tie down plate. An 18V impact will get them into the ground no problem. Easy removal too.

I once observed the Army tying L-19s down using rods about 24 inches long with duck bill anchors which could be unscrewed, leaving only the duck bill anchors behind. Any one ever seen these?

Re: Tie Downs For High Sierra

I survived the HSF 2017 with a pair of these. Some work to get in, but when the tent is caving in it's nice to not have to deal with the plane also.
