Tieton WA (geese close on final)

Lots of geese at Tieton, fortunately Atahoe who flew there a few days before told me about it, so I decided to come from the mountain in case I needed to go around.
Saw quite a bit of them so extended the landing to touch down farther, but did not see some geese under the shade of the trees and they were kind of too close for comfort on short final, at this point was a surprise and too low and slow to try to avoid them and might make things worse.

Re: Tieton WA (geese close on final)

For several years I lived at 48WA, just over the hills to the east and flew my dog up there 2-3 times a week.
Usually have the place to yourself on week days.
That's a good one to always make a low pass toward the lake to locate and remove any deer, elk geese, cows or people. Not everyone that camps there realizes it is a runway even with the signs posted and runway markers.
Had to make 3 passes one day to get the cows off the runway - then ended up with lots of cow pie under my wings.
After being assured the coast was clear I would turn around and land back toward the North.
You can expect some tailwind off the lake after about 10 am and can get pretty gusty in the pm during warm temps.

Re: Tieton WA (geese close on final)

Someone just posted the other day on the pacificnorthwestflying.com website that he had overflown Tieton over the (Memorial Day?) weekend, and someone had parked their camping trailer right on the runway.
I suggested he contact WS-DOT Aviation and tell them, maybe they can add a gate or some signage to prevent this in the future.
He replied "I will if I see that again". #-o

Re: Tieton WA (geese close on final)

I usually go early in the morning and week days.
I saw another post saying that they flew over the strip and people would not move out .
And unfortunatelly has terrible reputation for camping , lots of people, parties, drunks and fights at night.

We should send Dave ID to teach them some backcountry ethiquete. :D

THis is from car campers more so than aviators I think.
Kinda what happens when there's easy road access (road goes right it the place)--
esp in the middle of the Cascades where there's equal access for assholes from both western and eastern WA.

I think your "week days" thing is probably the way to go.

I am pretty sure it is from car campers, there are tons of them on holiday weekends.

I have been there twice, probably in the week, and had it to myself (with cows).

Its a really nice spot.

Anyone seen one of these at Rimrock? I love seeing them when i'm in a boat fishing up there. They're hard to catch with a camera. You can hear them coming but have to be quick to find and focus on them before the're gone again.

I have seen them a few times - very impressive!
They are usually coming out of the west and make a 90 degree turn north across the lake with a good view of them from the end of the airstrip. You hear them before you see them.
Always makes me hope they see me when we are both in the air - they are moving low, fast and very hard to spot.
The wild, unruly campers are the ones that drive in. Twice last year they removed and / or destroyed the runway markers along both sides the full length of the strip - all of them.
No telling what type of debris or foreign objects may be in the landing zone left over from the weekend warriors so look closely when you overfly it.

Re: Tieton WA (geese close on final)

That's most likely an EF-18 "Growler" from NAS Whidbey Island.
I was at Tieton once years ago when a pair of EA-6B Prowlers flew through the canyon, low and fast!
Felt lucky I was on the ground not in the air when they were doing so.
Not sure how well their TCAS or whatever works in the canyons--
I'm sure they wouldn't have any radar coverage from SEA Center.

Yep low level route VR-1355 goes right to the West end of Rimrock lake then turns North towards Keechelus Lake, Glacier Peak, then back to Whidbey NAS.

Those gray oil burners are really hard to see until it is way too late. Transponder on and hopefully that and your radar signature makes you visible.

Re: Tieton WA (geese close on final)

Thanks for posting that video. It was good to see your approach to 20. I have landed there in the afternoon on some really windy days and landed far longer than I anticipated. I have seen cows on the runway several times. My dog loves rolling around in their droppings. Good thing the lake is a short walk away.

The place can have lots of drunks and noise at night. But it still is one of my favorite places to camp. The lake is beautiful especially at night during a full moon. Most of the campers are nice families who are usually there to greet you when you land. There can be a lot of mud in the center of the runway after heavy rains or in the Spring after the snow melts. You are technically not supposed to land there until after the 1st of the June.

I’d probably tell them not to exploit the backcountry to sell knockoff sunglasses and when they get called out on it, not to be so butthurt.
