I have been mounting own my tires for over 20 years. I have always had 700x6 on the mains of three different strait tail 182's. I just bought a set of 800x6. I think I have been using Air Tracks. Well this time I went a bit more expensive and bought Good Year.

Always in the past the tires went on the rims with ease. This time the tires are really tight. I did manage to get one mounted but had to use soap and use a piece of all thread rod and spanners to pull the wheel haves together. Tightened the bolts and aired it up and it looked as if the tire went on the rim all the way. After letting out the air the tire pulled away from the edge of the rim about 3/8 of an inch. What am I doing wrong or is this standard for some tires.

I’ll let you know if Goodyear ever has a good year.

Until then, I recommend Michelins. Actually, anything you like, except Goodyear.

My bias comes from commercial vehicle experience, but Goodyear aircraft tires don’t impress me either, and I’ve seen some seriously out of round new Goodyear aircraft tires.

Opposite opinion (heavy on opinion) regarding Goodyear. For me, last 40 yrs, GYs were cheaper than others so that is what I ran on 210s to five different tandem TWs. GY 26 tundra tire on SC lasted well past 5 yrs- lots of concrete RWs. Granted my business (lots of smaller trucks & trailers) probably ran less than 50% GY-if we found a good wearing tire we stayed with that brand until something changed. Don't know much about manufacturing a tire but can't imagine there's much difference between companies.
Again, half assed opinion.

FYI, I’ve installed several Goodyear Flight Custom 2 8:00 x 6 on Cleveland mains over the past few years with no issues. That’s using new tubes each time.

Put a set of GY flight custom 2's on my 206 six years ago. Can't be happier. I only fly her 100 hrs per year, one landing every three hours or so. Half of those on dirt. I was finally seeing enough wear this year to flip em. Good tires.
Not to say the latest ones are crap.....

I’ve run Goodyear’s for years on various planes. Their tires outlast Brand D by a factor of two or three.

Never had a problem mounting them either.

But, Tim…….duh, this is a backcountry site. Get some Goodyear 8.50s and call us back. If yer gonna be a weenie QM, hire someone to mount your tires……

I’m aware of two instances of Goodyear tires that were substantially out of round. Balancing was tried. Anything will balance given enough weight, but they still shook the landing gear violently due to the out of round. The distributor provided a replacement with another brand. Problem solved.

There’s every possibility that the tires qmdv has have an undersized or misshaped bead area. Its that or the wheels are too big, and I highly doubt that. I’d contact where you bought them for a replacement. If they insist on exact replacements, I wouldn’t agree unless they were of a different batch number.

Exchange them if you can!!!

Many years ago I worked at a tire shop. Use real Tire Mounting Lubrican. And lots of it. We would sometimes have to put a lot more air into the tire to get it to seat. We always used a cage on split rims.

If you are not going to exchange the tires, take them to a tire shop with a cage.

If you really want to DIY cover with a moving blankets. Get a chuck that locks onto the stem. Cover with blankets. Get a long air hose and turn the pressure up well away from it. BE BEHIND A WALL OR VEHICLE. These things can explode!!

Most tire companies say never exceed 40 psi to seat the beads, even if the normal operating pressure is higher.

You probably have some tires with manufacturing defects.

You do need to seat the tires on the rims. How much pressure did you apply initially?

I run them up to 45 psi, which USUALLY seats them.

But, you may have a bad pair of tires. I can honestly say I’ve never seen a problem with Goodyear tires, but it’s certainly possible.

It doesn’t take much diameter difference of the bead area to make a tire very tight and hard to get seated. The use of mounting lube is very critical because if the bead is only “mostly “ seated it will cause the tire to essentially be out of round. Also no split rim aircraft tire should ever be fully inflated until the wheel is mounted on the axle and the bearings and retaining nut installed. Also when removing a wheel to pack bearings it should be deflated. I know you’re going to say you’ve never had a problem, but an exploding tire/wheel can take your head off. Do it the safe way even if it’s not convenient.
