Toketee (3S6) Overnight

Did you fly somewhere cool, take photos, and feel like telling the tale to make us drool from the confines of our offices? Post them up!

Toketee (3S6) Overnight

A good friend of mine turned 34 last week and we were suppose to take a backpacking trip down the lower Rogue. Because of work I couldn't make it, so I threw out the idea of flying somewhere for a short overnight. He was in.

Toketee State Airport is only about 60nm NE of Grants Pass. We loaded up late Thursday and landed about 15 minutes before sunset.

This place is great with the exception there is no water nearby. So guess that means you just drink beer.

We woke up early and explored. I am now a convert to the hammock when able. Best sleep I have ever had camping.

Image

No paper in the pilot registry. I am making a list of things I need to bring next time to spruce the place up.

Image

The FS must of been just in here doing some slashing. You see the ground can be soft.

Image

Because of all this slashing there is PLENTY of firewood.

Image

There is a trail that TomW and I had explored last year, but now I believe it is a hand dug fire line. It keeps you above the creek.

Image

No windsock when I landed. Either it broke and someone took it down, or someone broke it.

Image

Broke at the threads. I measured all the parts so I can get replacements out there.

Image

It would be awesome to figure out if there is an internet feed for this weather station located next to the windsock.

Image

Can't talk about Toketee and not mention the Elk. There do a fine job of mowing the grass and keeping tiny tired Cessnas away.

Took off after exploring for brunch at the Trophy Room in Prospect.

There is a link for that weather station, but it's to the fire guys. You'd have to talk to the local fire managers and see if they'll share. Those systems are designed to provide fire information, much of which isn't real useful for flying, but winds and temperatures are handy to have. There's no ceilometer or visibility sensor there. Fire guys want to know winds, temperature and relative humidity.

I used to have access to the Alaska Fire Service's systems, since my office maintained several of them. Don't know if they'll provide links, and all those were seasonal as well, as in only active during the fire season.

Toketee is a great airport, my wife and I stopped there last year on our way to Grants Pass.

That weather station is the Toketee Remote Automated Weather System (RAWS) for the wildfire folks.

Here is a link to the Toketee RAWS page, gives basic wind info and temp.
http://raws.wrh.noaa.gov/cgi-bin/roman/meso_base.cgi?stn=TOFO3&time=GMT

Nationwide RAWS info, good for density altitude I guess.

I enjoyed seeing the Toketee photos gtpc. After I retired from the FS in 98 my wife worked as the fire lookout on Cinnamon Butte. We spent 3 summers up there. Lots of interesting area to explore.
