towing / pulling plane into hangar???

ok i used to push my f19 into hangar with not much trouble but now my f22 is a whole different story mostly due to 40 gallon tanks some times its impossible if grass is not mowed or wet .
thinking in future plan on putting in a winch or buying a tow rig just don't have lots of cash to just go buy whatever.
anyone have ideas on best winch or tow rig for the money. ???
going from grass to slab in hangar.
thanks

how about a riding lawnmower and a towbar. Used to two 206s and 182s around with one, not a big one either.

I don't get that. Tow bar that Y's out to the mains, so you pull it out and push it in.

Re: towing / pulling plane into hangar???

There's an outfit that advertises in Trade A Plane for hangar winches. They work great, and I regularly pulled C 206 size planes into T hangars with them. They have a level wind spool on them, which is really nice.

Otherwise, get a small four wheeler winch, and a spare battery to power it.

Here is a $50 option...just need a battery or a/c adapter for it.

Some fellows at my old airport hangout used them routinely and they work like a charm.

Re: towing / pulling plane into hangar???

You can keep it simple, and use a rope fence stretcher that I rerigged with longer rope. It has a couple hooks and 4 rope sheaves, once I get the plane kinda lined up in front of the hangar I hook it to the tailspring, and the 4 to 1 mechanical advantage makes it an easy job. All I had to do was bolt a hardpoint on the rear of the hangar. Plus, I use the same rope pulley thingie for lots of other misc pulling etc. About 20 bucks, no power required.

This is at the other end of the economic scale, but if you need to mow grass, push snow, gravel, and other chores, then the plane mover part is spread out. It is a Steiner 4x4 with a quick attach system (less the 60 seconds between attachments).

I push and pull the plane with this, and never get off the seat. The tail wheel grab thing is home made.

Re: towing / pulling plane into hangar???

I got my ATV winch from Northern Tool also but I got one that has a wireless remote so I can watch it come in the T hangar. I never thought I would have a plane as big as this one and built the hangar too small. I have only three inches on each side of the 10' 7" elevator and a foot and a half clearance at each wing tip. I lagged a four inch channel iron to the floor to put the tail wheel in for a guide in and out and the winch pulls the plane in from the tail wheel tow bar. I pull it back out with the ATV and a lariat around the main gear to keep from scratching the paint while the channel iron keeps it coming out straight. I got tired of guessing where to square up the main wheels on the grass before winching it in so I mounted a laser level light to the hangar frame and it shines on a spot in the grass out in the front of the hangar where the left main wheel needs to be before the tailwheel gets to the channel iron guide. Works every time and we don't worry about hitting a marker with the lawn mower. Did I mention this is our front lawn?

Nah, you don't want one of those wimpy solutions. This is what you need.

Re: towing / pulling plane into hangar???

I purchased one of these last week and fabricated a mount that I bolted to one of the upright hanger beams. www.harborfreight.com/automotive-motorc ... 96127.html I paid $110.00 for it after finding a 20% off coupon in one of my hunting magazines. I was going to get what others have suggested with a 12 volt powered winch and a battery but I figured by the time I bought the $50 winch and then another $50 for a battery it was the same cost roughly.
I had to replace the cable with a longer one due to my hangar having an incline at the door. Had the plane nearly full of fuel (guessing close to 1100lbs.)
and the winch worked fine. It is slow but then I don't hurt my back trying to wrestle the plane in the hangar anymore either. :) Before I installed the winch I used my Argo 8-wheeler but in the winter when I had tracks on it it wouldn't do the job as the tracks just spun on the frozen concrete floor.
