Stay away from Grand Forks if at all possible. Yes, they have customs, but they have the most expensive gas in three states, and it's not a friendly airport, really.
Consider the Peace Garden, just west of Grand Forks:

Fargo has a nice aviation museum, and hotels and restaurants in the vicinity of the museum as well. Friendly airport, though it's a TRSA.
Or, fly across northern Minnesota to Duluth/Superior WI. Nice airport there on the spit in Lake Superior. From there, fly east along the south shore of Lake Superior into the Upper Peninsula of MI. South past the bridge and you'll skip both Minneapolis and Chicago, and see some really pretty country to boot.
