Update on BCP 2.0: Call for article submissions

Hey everybody, I just wanted to report that I'm getting much closer to completion of the new website. It's a mountain of work, but it's starting to get really exciting. ChrisG from Shortfield.com and I are now talking about a possible simultaneous launch of our new sites-- we've got a whole bunch of new ways for you to waste time and think about airplanes and places to fly them.

One thing I could use a hand with is some new articles-- original, unpublished narratives written by members of the BCP community. Long ago when I first started BCP, I asked for articles to be submitted, and we got some good stuff: Stories of bear standoffs, sheep hunts, encounters with ice overflow, PiReps on places and experiences with getting new ratings -- It was fun, and I still have those indexed somewhere. I'd like to have some new stuff accumulated by launch time, so I'm making the call to you guys for submissions. I know many of you fly every day, in some incredible places, and have some great adventures that us office dwellers would love to be privy to.

Everyone's familiar with aviation news websites. Avweb.com, AOPA, etc all do a great job of churning up news bits. Avweb especially has some great videos of their contributors and editors checking out new aircraft and new products. The new site is going to have an increased news and feature element to it, and I could use your help getting started on that.

Here's are some examples of articles categories that would be great to have, but we are by no means limited to:

  • Extended PiReps (meaning more verbose and narrative than usual) on airstrips, or a "rating vacation", fly-in etc.
  • Modification report, maybe a before and after performance review.
  • Aircraft builder's log, could be periodic/recurring.
  • Maintenance tips, field repairs (the guilty shall be protected.)
  • A trip report with photos and/or video.
  • A detailed "Live to Tell" tale, like AOPA's Never Again.
  • An installment of an ongoing campaign, like Onthegas's "landing at every state airport in CA" thread.
  • General editorial thoughts on backcountry aviation, opinion pieces, etc.
  • Interview with an industry personality or company (aircraft, aviation, mods, instruction, maintenance, etc.)
  • Product reviews (no shills please.)
  • An encounter with great airplane, in great detail (See MTV's article on the Cessna Airmaster in AOPA last year. Very nice work.)

Take photos or video if possible. Submissions can be sent to me via email to [email protected]. Please don't post them in the forum, as they are going to be revealed for the first time on launch day! It's just more fun for everyone that way I think. Later on it won't matter as I will continue to collect bits of goodness from the forum as usual. Photos can be sent via email attachments, please do not embed them in a Word file. Videos, go ahead and upload them to Vimeo or Youtube if you can. I can also host videos here and will help you get them uploaded if you don't want to use the major video sites.

It's possible to make some articles and video available only to logged-in members if you require that.

Free t-shirt(s) to the author(s) of pieces that get published. I understand that's nothing really, but hey, you'll get kudos and accolades from the community too! Later down the road I might be able to afford to pay a few bucks.

Much appreciated.

I really appreciate the hard effort you have put into this site since you started it. It is still the best one of it's kind. Looking forward to the new one. I'll try to think of some stories to share.

Bump. :) I'm working on writing scripts to convert our current photo gallery to the new one. This is no easy task. #-o

Some quality content sure would make this easier...

Hey Janitor

I cannot guarantee much in the way of quality, but I have been trying to scribble up a couple more stories for ya in my spare time.

Be careful what ya ask for though, I just might ask for some editorial input.

I've received a nice story from Skystrider. I'm working on some stuff myself (sort of a Pilot Getaways style piece.)

Would be nice to get some stuff from you guys. :)

Zane I've got your back. I have an awesome L-19 video that a buddy just finished. I just need to ask him if he wants it on the web.

I would love to see the video! A friend of mine had an L-19 back in about 1994 or 5. It was a perfectly restore one too. I would love to have one for backcountry flying, but heard the performance may not be all that great for high DA and short field performance. Plus I wouldn't want to beat up a nice aluminum vintage plane like an L-19.

Re: Update on BCP 2.0: Call for article submissions

I sent Zane the article they did about my plane and me at OSH in 2009. To get it posted on the BCP I need to get Kitplanes and/or Rick Lindstrom to give me their blessing.... A few months back I got in a interesting email discussion with the editor of Kitplanes on where to draw the line on using my images and story without a written consent and release from me, for them to run an article in their magazine..... I guess my question is......................

Why does a magazine get away with using my story/images without a release and I can't use the same article to share with you guys without getting them to sign off. ???

I am all ears.

Zane,

it's going to ROCK, man!
Great Stuff!
You know where to find my stuff, whatever you feel like putting out there......... full permission.

Ben,

how did they get your story? If you wrote it, I suggest making it a .pdf and retain as your own copy. Did you overlook some fineprint?
Cheers,

Re: Update on BCP 2.0: Call for article submissions

It is a very interesting scenerio

Kitplanes mag sells for 3.00 at a newsstand.

19.95 a year for a subscription.

you can go online and buy my article. http://www.kitplanes.com/issues/26_12/e ... 26-1.phtml

for 7.50, or view the entire Dec edition for less. I asked and they said it was a premium article and it commands a premium price.

So I called and tried to order 100 copies to hand out at airshows, promoting both their magazine and my plane.. Mary Bernard, the managing editor told me that edition was sold out and there was no more back copies to sell me. She would sell me the electronic copy of pictures of me and my plane for ALOT of money. So I then called the Kitplanes at their back issue phone number, 1-800-622-1065, the gal there said they had cases and cases to sell me for 6 bucks apiece. :? I then emailed Mary back and asked for her to mail me a copy so I could show my attorney of a written release I signed for Kitplanes to use images of me, my plane and my story on how it all came to be, that was published in their maganize and is currently being sold at a premium price electronically...... Never heard another word from her.. Not surprizing though, [-X

No problem though.. Time is on my side. :P :P :P

Re: Update on BCP 2.0: Call for article submissions

I'm about wrapped up.

Question... Can I upload my photos to photobucket and send the links over? Or do you want me to email you all the pics (may take a bit)?

I can see how you don't want them on photobucket, picasa, etc because if the account gets closed you lose all the pics in the report. But it would be less work for you if I could just embed the URL links.

It'll be in your inbox by Sat.

Matt,

Please email me the photos and text to [email protected]. The reason being the way I use them in the new website software it makes it necessary to host them at bcp. One option to get them to me is to make sure they're resized down to like 1280 pixels wide (no image file should be more than 200k), then zip them all into a single .zip file and attach.

Your video(s) however can just be hosted at Vimeo or Youtube.

Thanks!
