I ran across this a couple days ago and has lots of good pics and descriptions of several Utah Strips. Another great site is the Utah Backcountry Pilots site. They have a great database of Utah strips with strip information and some have PIREPS. You need to join to view it but it is worth it. They are also having a flyin lunch at IBEX Hardpan soon and that is a really cool place. Southeastern Utah is riddled with strips from the uranium boom. Here the link:

I stumbled onto that site a couple of years ago and forgot about it. Those are some great pictures of the airstrips and of the surrounding terrain.

However, his caption for this picture isn't exactly correct:



"Scenery along the route after leaving Mexican Mountain."



That is obviously a picture of Upheaval Dome inside of Canyonlands National Park. It's about 50 miles from Mexican Mountain, but only 7 miles from Mineral Canyon.

It looks to me like he's flying about 1000' above the terrain in the park, which could raise the ire of the NPS. I strongly advise that pilots never do such things unless they do it correctly, like this guy:

The weather is finally turning around and we are seeing some nice spring days! The UBCP Board met a while ago and calendared a few back country runway clean up days. Please join us if time and resources permit.

April 16 Mexican Mountain
May 21 Mineral Canyon

UBCP is authorized to perform what is termed "casual maintenance" on these landing strips. Casual maintenance means restoring the runway to the original as-built condition using hand tools only. These three runways are in pretty good shape and it wont take much to spruce them up.

In addition, UBCP has been given permission by the BLM to use mechanized equipment at Mineral Canyon and we have been in contact with the Grand County Road Crew Supervisor who has agreed to dispatch a grader to the landing strip sometime after Mar. 29. We hope to get this done before the clean up on May 21st which will reduce the amount of work that needs to be done with hand tools. We will keep you informed when they give us a better date. With the grader on the runway, we will be asking pilots to not plan on flying to the air strip that day. You are certainly invited to drive in and help out. (The incredible switch back road from the Wingate cliff to the river bottom has been re-built this spring and I would heartily recommend the drive).

Also, the traditional spring fly in at IBEX has been scheduled for April 29, 30, and May 1. UBCP will cook hamburgers again this year and we are hoping for good weather. We'll get more details out and an advance look at the condition of the lake bed as the time draws closer.
