vaccum required on 170?

I have a new to me 170b, can I remove the vaccuum gauges and venturi? I looked on the tcds and it was pretty vague. This is a day vfr plane for me, with a dynon efis on the panel and my ipad I want to remove the ai and dg if I can as well as venturis and plumbing.

Re: vaccum required on 170?

The original certification was with a T&B only so my understanding is you would need a suitable replacement for that, otherwise everything else can go.

T&B is electric on a 170.

I removed the whole vacuum system from my old 170. Talk to the IA who will be signing off your annual inspections.

Re: vaccum required on 170?

I removed the complete vacuum system on my old C170 as well.
Not legally required, nor needed for my VFR flying.
Not even sure the T&B / turn coordinator is required,
but probably a good idea to keep it, even if it isn't.
If you have a factory weight and balance / equipment list,
everything should be marked standard, optional, and/or required.
Or else (like my 53 180) there should be a list of required equipment at the bottom of the page.

Re: vaccum required on 170?

I removed mine in conjunction with installing a G5. Already had shed the venturis for engine-driven as part of a 180Hp upgrade.

Actually, IMHO the TCDS is not vague at all.

https://rgl.faa.gov/Regulatory_and_Guid ... Rev_55.pdf

Required equipment is listed at the end of each model (170/170A/170B) specific section.
No vacuum system or gyros listed.
In fact, the only thing like that on the entire TCDS is item 604 "venturi installation".
Lose all that vacuum junk, do a logbook entry & new weight and balance, and go fly.

Re: vaccum required on 170?

Required basic equipment listed under CAR 3 must be installed. I think thats what I followed when I did mine 6 years ago. I took out the T&B and only had a slip and skid indicator installed on my panel.

Re: vaccum required on 170?

Rob- That's a great idea. I've thought about my kids learning in my 170 when they're older, and the one thing I'd want for them is a better slip/skid than the tiny one on the G5. Also, it's been said before, but man what a nice job you did on that 170! =D>

Re: vaccum required on 170?

Thanks for the help, will have it in the hangar and removing the system among other things.

Are there any references I can steer my IA to use for swapping to newer control wheels?

Re: vaccum required on 170?

If you have original 170 yokes you can scrape off the old plastic coating and then have them powder coated and they will end up looking better than new. Then I had a graphic design shop make up some 170 decals to finish it off. That’s what I did and I really liked the results.

You upgraded from an awesome 170 to an awesome 180.
Why the regret?
What do you miss about the 170?

Yes, that's correct, slip skid is required, turn coordinator hadn't even been invented yet, and T & B was not required.

Re: vaccum required on 170?

The best way I found to get it off of the control wheel is to just put them in a bucket of lacquer thinner and the stuff comes right off I didn’t even take the rivets out of the shaft. I powder coated them with the shaft on and had the shaft sticking out of a new insulated door I made for my oven

I didn't care for the yokes in my old C170, they just weren't comfortable to me--
right side up, upside down, or any other way.
I ended up installing a set of early 172 yokes.
Dunno if it was accordjing to Hoyle or not,
but we just logged it as "replaced control wheels with cessna p/n xxxxx".
Logbook entry only.
