Valentine to Cody

The folks in Valentine couldn't have been nicer...they made me feel I was the original owner of the airport car and I sort of lorded around town in my dusty brown lincoln with city Government tags...I rolled south under 2000 to have a look at the Sand Hills...like being at sea.
Image
A last good bye to Niobrara and I headed north to the Bad Lands east of Rapid City.
Image
The White River marked my approach...
Image
and I continued north to I-90 then west past Wall
Image
before turning SW at the NW corner of the park.
Image
The landscape is moonscape...
Image
Image
but the real wild stuff is deeper into the park.

I swung north along the west side of Rapid City and the Black Hills appeared...I climbed to about 7500 and surprise...
Image
Mount Rushmore..
Image
Keeping my distance, I turned west and discovered Crazy Horse.
Image
When complete, the monument will depict Crazy Horse astride his war pony and with his arm outstretched toward the land there his people are buried. The entire Mt. Rushmore monument would fit in the head of Crazy Horse...that's the difference between chiseling with air hammers and blasting with explosives.
Heading north, I again cross I-90 but near Sundance...next into view...Devil's Tower.

Image
A strange sight to see pushing up from the plain.
But now a little altitude was called for as I slid up the east side of the Beartooth Mtns. toward Sheridan....
past the Tongue River
Image
with the Beartooths off my left wing
Image
and US-14 coming down out of the mountains...
Image
I took a cut at a low spot.

This didn't look like 13.5 to me

The rest of the landscape across the Bighorn recreation area speaks for itself.

particularly where the Big Horn River goes cross country down to Greybull

Soon, Cody appears in the windscreen and the day is over.

But, what a day.

Re: Valentine to Cody

Great pictures. I completed my private check ride in Valentine and then was stuck in town due to weather. I cruised around in the airport car for a day. It was a K car at that time. I love spending time in that part of the country that you flew over. I will not make it to Cody for the 4th of July this year. It just doesn't seem right to miss that. Oh well. Good memories!

Well, if I were still full of piss and vinegar I'd be down in the weeds with all you BCPs...as it is, I do what I can. Hope you enjoy./ L
