Very Lucky in BC

Got a call from a neighbor a little while ago and when I answered, he said "you are here". I said, yeah, so? He then told me about a plane crash at 100 Mile House, BC where I have my plane tied down and that it was a white and blue Cessna, same as mine!!!! I then tuned the news and saw a bit of info. Here is the link and about all that I know.

The one thing I can say is that the normal landing direction is from over a meadow and uphill towards town. To be landing downhill and over the town is something that I would only do with a 10+ mph wind, otherwise landing on this strip uphill is safer IMO. Very lucky not to have injuries or worse. FF

Re: Very Lucky in BC

The news said he hit a powerline. The website said it was a 'Merican plane.

Too bad about those things, but at least they weren't hurt.

Welcome back to civilization Ford. You goin' to Atlin if that ol bird will start up? Lots of BC'ers going. Remember to wear clean underwear in case you're in an accident! :)

Logan: Interesting that you can no longer spell American? Yes, it was a USA registered plane and the owner apparently has bought Silver Tip Resort which is a heli ski base by Quesnel Lake. I talked to the airport manager and he said that the 172 with 3 people on board and loaded rather heavily, tried to take off up hill with a 15-20 mph tailwind. The plane went UNDER the hydro(electrical) wires and hit the telephone wires and then impacted the restaurant's sign. Looking at the plane it is a miracle that they all walked away from this. Just got to wonder what the thought process was? #-o

Still considering the $1.94 per liter av gas in our area vs the joy of seeing you and other BCFPAs pilots in Atlin. Would be nice to meet JM and, again, see John Faulkner. FF

Re: Very Lucky in BC

Hmmm. I've taken off downhill with a tailwind, and uphill with a heckuva headwind, but never uphill with a tailwind. If those facts are true, what was he thinking? Amazing that injuries weren't massive or worse.

GT: Yep, you were there last year. Jake and Raven could have a good time, if he can catch her! Three strikes and you are out, #1 uphill, #2 tailwind, #3 3 people and lots of gear in a 172, and #4 towards buildings and all utility wires! His next stop should have been 6' under but instead he should make it to a lottery outlet, all of them. #-o

Re: Very Lucky in BC

Nimpo Cub: Yesterday I was at the airport and talked to another pilot who had talked to this guy, there were comments about a "downdraft" at the time of the crash. The plane had no shoulder harnesses, pilot estimated to be 200 lbs, male passenger 180 lbs, and female passenger 130 lbs plus and 80+ lbs of baggage. It also appears that there will be no investigation as the cause seems pretty straight forward. This reminds me of another incident, at Nimpo Lake, where a Maule T-boned the shoreline after a "stuck throttle", maybe you remember that one? =D>

Re: Very Lucky in BC

Sorry, I don't buy downdraft over level ground. His "downdraft" came from hitting the phone line.
He was heavy (over?) and tried to TO downwind... DOOMED from the time he smiled & said "We'll be fine".

Yep, that Maule had just been crashed/rebuilt before he came to Nimpo. We flew around here several times, the ONE time I rode w/him, I saw 3x5 cards showing configuration, RPM, etc. for different ops. He actually flew that thing from notes. The "stuck throttle" was stuck brain. From the time he touched down to the time he hit the shore there was plenty of time to shut 'er down IF the throttle was in fact stuck. Throttle was smooth post-crash.
He's back in Calif. :)
