Yes. Looks a little longer than 500' and the slope up on about half the length helps both landing and takeoff. Rate of closure seemed a little fast, but good job.

Upslope. 720'. Private strip owned by John Gaines, on Saturna Island, north side. He was a helicopter pilot with VIH for a long time and owned a Citabria and other airplanes. If you land there, be sure to swing it right at the top to line up with the downhill. Some fat-tired plane swung it left and the slick tires on the wet grass took him straight across the "runway" into the oak tree on the other side. If you bend anything there, they've got a good assortment of tools and welding rigs to fix you up so you can leave.

I was there a few months ago with a Jetranger (no challenge there). Snapped a picture from the top. Haven't landed an airplane there yet. Friendly guys, used to be the Four Winds B&B if you want to book a night. Watch the winds. N48 47.37 W123 06.45

North Pender Island/Hastings Airstrip has recently been sold and closed. It is now a sheep pasture and will become green houses shortly. A pilot recently landed there and took out 2 plastic snow/sheep fences and an electric fence. Luckily no animals were harmed in the making of the movie. When the owner confronted the pilot the response he got was " I have been flying in here for 40 years, what the hell do you guys think you are doing." The owner went to get his camera and record the situation and when he came back the plastic and electric fence had been removed from the propeller. The pilot was taking off and the land owner had to drop to the ground to avoid getting hit as the plane took off.
It is a sorry thing to loose such a wonderful airstrip but it is private property.
Another sad thing is that the asking price was 1.3 million for the 46 acres. A group had it appraised and it was actually worth 750,000 so they offered that amount! The deceased owners son said that was an insulting price. The property actually sold for 450,000 and the runway disappeared.

Was the airplane sporting a skull and crossbones?
If it wasn't gone already, that kind of behavior would pretty much ensure that the airstrip would go away.
Hope the guy doesn't fly into many strips that are borderline visitor friendly with that attitude, they'll be changed to PPR (prior permission required) by the time he leaves.

I realized that but I just could not resist making the comment about my friends Spencer Aircar. It is the one shown in the picture and it clearly shows the skull and crossbones. The paint job very much matches his rebel attitude but he would never do anything like that . His plane is based at Nanaimo and just a short distance from the old Hastings field.
I think the pilot that landed there flew in with a COWBOY hat and quickly switched it to his little pointy hat (dunce)when he stepped out of the plane.
It is pilots like that and his stupid behavior that close airstrip for us. Two things show up here,#1 is he did not do his homework and #2 he was not willing to take responsibility for his actions. Stupid and Chicken Shit.

Re: the original video. Obviously it's longer than 500', but even 720' is pretty short, especially with a stand of trees at the end. The steep upslope is a big benefit, for sure. Heck, at the elevations around here where my TAS is typically 10%-15% higher than at sea level, I can get down and stopped on a flat (not sloped) surface in about 650', and I'm no super pilot, nor do I have a super STOL airplane (but I do have to work at it!). But put a barrier up at the end, and I'd be sweating. It's the sort of thing that daunts, much like a golfer hitting a ball over a water hazard where the distance isn't any different from any other hole, but the ball ends up in the drink anyway.

Once we have decided to land, we have to land. In really tight situations, thinking about going around late will mess up the landing. It's like having to make a wings level rudder turn to miss the pole while going under a wire. We just can't dwell on the wire. At a certain point, we are committed to going under the wire. In our mind, the wire does not exist.

The very beginning of the landing zone exists. We have to touch down slow there. The pole exists. We have to time the rudder turn around it. In these situations, we have things to think about. Doubt here is dangerous.
