Video: Bumpy flight into Schafer Meadows, MT
Did you fly somewhere cool, take photos, and feel like telling the tale to make us drool from the confines of our offices? Post them up!

Now, I wasn't scared (nervous, yes) but it turns out my wife and daughter didn't like this flight at all. But it did turn out to be an awesome backpacking trip in the Great Bear wilderness.
Some of you guys will get a kick out of this because in a short field plane this wouldn't be a big deal at all. (More on this trip at

Any idea what the ridge elevation wind speeds were? I always get a kick about guys living on the prairie going flying when the wind is blowing 30-40kts. Ridge top wind speeds of 30+ knots can make things very interesting in the mountains!

The narration made that video 10x more interesting, even though it was great sharp footage to begin with. Good job.

I'm guessing 15 to 20 knots. The other issue was after the ridge I hit an updraft/wave that was sucking me up into the clouds. Not that big of a deal - I dropped the gear again and pulled the power back to descend and maintain maneuvering speed, but it didn't add to my wife's comfort!

That was cool! Wish I had some cool places like that to go fly where I am.
Nubie question: Any reason you didnt execute a forward slip coming in over the trees?

I'm not sure about the 210 but slipping with full flaps on many Cessnas can block out airflow over the tail and result in an abrupt nose down attitude... not a good thing while on short final.

I do use forward slips occasionally to get down fast, and I haven't had the nose down drop. But did you see how close the trees were on the left? I wasn't confident that my forward slip would be 100% straight ahead at all times, although I know it should be. Plus it was gusty and I don't think I would be comfortable slipping in gusty conditions.

No prob, just thought I'd check. I am a 60 hour pilot.

Flybikeski - your video and narration were great in that they brought us along on your trip as well as your decision making. I can see how your family could be a little nervous and give them much credit for being troopers.

Nice. Where did you guys end up backpacking to? I've often though about doing the same thing at Schafer.

Nice video! I love Schafer. We camped there two years ago early in the summer and it was just crawling with wildlife. Beautiful place!

A while back I came across some great info regarding slips with flaps. I didn't want to hijack this thread, so I posted a new one with the information. It's a good read. Enjoy!

Awesome video by the way! How do you have your cameras mounted...especially the one on the top of the vertical stab?

Great short story! Nice editing and great footage. I suspect if you had recorded your family during the aborted landing with the bumpy conditions they wouldn't have sounded as calm as you did on the narration. Hopefully the hike made up for the discomfort on the flight in and the return to your home base was benign.

Did you guys do any fishing while backpacking. Have received varying reports on fishing at Schafer?

We didn't fish but the ranger said the fishing in the river and surrounding lakes were among the best in the world. He was clearly disappointed that we were not fishing. I kind of wish I was.
