So, what video editing software do you video geeks use? I need something basic and simple.....windows computer, though I also have an I Pad.

Re: Video Editing

The stuff that comes with the gopro is good and simple, and the price is sure right...

I use adobe premier. It's not-so-free. It gives video like this with a mediocre editor: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YN5jHtbGD4Q

There are not many good in-between option on windows like the imovie thing on macs. You might try windows movie maker too.

Davinci Resolve Lite is free I think. I use it for color grading but it can be used for the whole process.

It's hard to beat iMovie if you have a Mac or iPad for simplicity. I imagine you're editing GoPro footage though?

Re: Video Editing

Windows Movie Maker if you want free and sort of works.

Adobe Premier if you want what the "geeks" are using on windows.

Final Cut Pro is the other option for those on Macs.

Re: Video Editing

Adobe Premier Pro. Sometimes if it's just a quick movie and not too many cuts, the GoPro software isn't bad. There is a definite learning curve with programs like PP and Sony Vegas. For my tail mounted view on the plane, I have to put the video through the premier pro warp stabilizer at 4% and it takes out all of the shake.

I think I would try iMovie on the iPad for now. It is pretty simple and I think it will give you what you need.

Re: Video Editing

I used adobe Premier Elements for a long time. Its relatively inexpensive and works pretty well. The program would get very sluggish and downright frustrating at time while trying to process the video especially higher quality video like from my DSLR. Worked ok for Gopro type video.

Now I use Adobe Premiere Pro. I am a member of Adobe Creative Cloud because I use other Adobe Products like Illustrator, Photoshop, Lightroom, and now Audition for recording voice and whatnot. It costs about 50.00 a month but I use it a lot.

I thought that my computer was the issue with slow video processing/editing. I changed to the higher quality (read: more expensive) editing software with better processing and my computer runs so fast now. I dont know the technicalities of why, however. I guess you get what you pay for.

The Garmin VIRB software is a good basic editor. It will work with other than Garmin video cameras.

Re: Video Editing

If your older, with little patience of having to read through reams of instructions to do simple tasks, then you will find most of these editors confusing to operate. Many of them have so many bells and whistles, that just looking at the work screen is baffling. So is the way with modern technology. Just like my cordless phone. It comes with an instruction sheet that is the size of a sheet of newspaper ( I shit you not), with fine print!. I can't even perform the simplest task of turning down the damned ringer without going through multiple menus. It's a good thing the light switch was invented along time ago, because now it would require an operators manual an inch thick.
This is how many programs are designed today, they lack intuitiveness and are complex in navigation, which is fine if you grew up in the computed world.
I have found only one editor that I could actually use with little study. Cyberlink's Powerdirector was very quick to learn and it comes with it's own Youtube uploader option right there on the rendering page with no hunting around in menus to find. It will render and upload in sequence in one process. Some will argue that it's not the best, granted. But it is, when it comes to getting to point a to b with little fanfare.

Re: Video Editing

You could try uploading some raw clips to Youtube, marked them private or unlisted, then using their built-in video editor in their "Creator Studio"

Re: Video Editing

I use Magix, but it also has a learning curve. Some guys used to use Muvee which was easy to use but you couldn't tweak it as much as you might like.

If you get iMovie to work on your iPad, please post some info like how you got your video to the iPad, which iPad you're using, quality of video, which size of video, etc.

Yep, that's one of the issues: How to move the videos from the micro sd to the IPad. Then there's the size of the files. Etc

Hoping to poke around with some of this this weekend.

Other suggestions welcome.

I think I've tried them all, almost settled on Magix then ended up on Power Director instead.

Had the same issue with moving SD card from GoPro to iPad. Bought one of these.

I use that when I'm traveling without my laptop. It works really well for previewing and backup. Warning though, the GoPro video files are pretty massive if you just let the camera run. You'll fill up your iPad fast, so you have to use them, then delete them, but not before importing/saving them elsewhere. Invest in a good USB external hard drive for archival. $100 these days gets you about a TB of space.

Old-style connection: http://amzn.to/1wKwEm9

All you need to adapt MicroSD is the adapter that most of them come with: http://amzn.to/1EV5zTs
They're a dime a dozen and if you're lucky you might find one on the sidewalk.

Re: Video Editing

So, if I edit video in IMovie, will the subsequent product be viewable only on Mac devices? I have a bunch of small videos that play fine on my PC, but won't play on a Mac

Re: Video Editing

Power Director not only formats for Youtube and Facebook, it has a portable device tab that renders for apple products, Ipad. Iphone,as well as other portable device formats. AVI, MPEG-X, wmv, mp4, AVC-HD, MOV. and MP3 and some Ive never heard of, with multiple resolution options. I figure if the dumbest people can functionally operate it.. I are me ! :?: , then it has to be designed good.

Re: Video Editing

I finally made the move to Power Director 11 about a year ago (it was on my computer much longer, but I just didn't get to it), after a couple of years exclusively with Windows Movie Maker. Just before Christmas, Cyberlink offered me an upgrade to Power Director 13, with their Audio Director and Wave Editor thrown in, for $55 and change. And I couldn't be happier! It's way faster, easier to use, and has noticeably more bells and whistles than PD11. =D>

For some specifics, here's my latest piece, on "Enhancing Videos using Power Director (13):"

Cool Video Sting. I thought I recognized your Youtube handle. Great video documentation on the state of the reservoirs in California you posted earlier. Be great do do an update. I heard Ca received a lot of rain lately and was wondering if it made any impact on the water storage situation.

You can export it to MP4 which will play on all. If you have access to a mac, imovie is really your best option from the tone of your questions.
