VIDEO: Ground Reference Maneuvers

Practicing some low altitude, ground reference maneuvers around pivot irrigation alfalfa fields. Good airspeed and plenty of places to land. :D
Bout time to clean that windshield.

Re: VIDEO: Ground Reference Maneuvers

A circular plowed field, why did I never think about that?

At first glimpse I thought "that's cheating" but as a CFI all I can think is "How freakin awesome is that!?!?!" Lots of learning possible there at various speeds and altitudes. Take them to the typical intersection of two roads later on and let them imagine the circle, but at first this would help a lot.

Re: VIDEO: Ground Reference Maneuvers

These fields are great practice areas. They are 1/2 mile across, circular, and have a center reference point (the irrigation head). In this video there are actually two of these fields side by side forming a figure eight. Yes, lots of good practice with different wind conditions (drift), altitudes, speeds, etc. They also work well for “turn around a point”. With the irrigation head as the “point” and a good breeze, stay lined up with the field perimeter as you fly circles. Then try the figure eight.
