Washington grass strips

Starting to explore some grass strips near my base airport.
S88 S86 and 1WA6
Cheaper fuel, no landing fees, beautiful scenery.
Like it so far :)

Re: Washington grass strips

Nice video! Is this the same plane you had in Costa Rica?

How about the HUD (I am assuming that is is a HUD)? Is that for the AOA indicator?

Re: Washington grass strips

I think Skykomish is closed right now according to WA Dept of Aeronautics. Maybe not, I dunno. I was planning on heading out to Tieton this week but called them and they said June 1 is the planned seasonal opening, which seems to be the case for many state-managed strips.

Re: Washington grass strips

Harvey (S43) has a parallel grass strip, not super back country but a nice little airport with a good diner and short walk from their downtown.

Copalis is also fun, but it's a beach

Lost River W12 is east but a fun little strip.

Re: Washington grass strips

I probably flew past you at some point, if you were flying Saturday. I flew across Stampede on Saturday for a late lunch at Harvey Field (S43). At some lunch at the resteraunt and watched the skydivers for a bit, then headed home. You might give that a try sometime, nice field and town is closeby as well.

Where are you based out of now?

Re: Washington grass strips

motoadve,

Very nice approaches, all!

There was just a bit of Dutch roll, dynamic proactive little coordinated turns, to stay aligned on approach two. Not at all a problem there, but can lead to the use of the shallow coordinated turn, below tree level, to align on the third approach.

A rudder only turn, while keeping the wing level with aileron, is the safest turn below the trees to line up on a crooked approach path. This prevents putting a wing down into wires or terrain, especially on a very crooked approach requiring either aggressive banking or aggressive rudder turning.

Maintaining alignment on final with rudder only, regardless of wind, and keeping the wing level or banked into the crosswind with aileron is a habit that will prevent unexpected wires or uneven terrain or obstacles becoming a problem in the future. In a nose down angle of attack, uncoordination (rudder turn, skid, or slip) is less of a problem than putting a wing down near the ground.

Again, very nice approaches, all!

Re: Washington grass strips

There's a number of grass strips around the Puget Sound area, both charted and uncharted.
My personal policy is not to land on a private airstrip unless I've been invited.
And I mean invited by the owner- IMHO "oh, everybody does it" or "just tell them Charlie said it's OK" doesn't cut it. Therefore I'm not gonna identify some of the ones I know about.
A good example of a low-profile private strip is the one near Duvall I think you went into with Jon when you were up here last year. Uncharted, and although I've been flying Puget Sound for 20 years I never even knew it was there until Jon told me where it was. As time goes on, and you spend more time flying the area and meet more locals, you'll get in on some of them.

Re: Washington grass strips

There's awesome flying up here.

I'm curious how you got into 1WA6, I fly by there all the time and was told it's definitely private and few get permission to land. That's hear-say though.
