weird lake hood departure

Check out the take off part of this video at the end. I have not been to lake hood, but it looks like this guy is flying between the buildings as he ended up departing down wind after he started upwind. Is this a normal departure path out there?

Ignore the guy commentating - don't think he know what he's talking about

Re: weird lake hood departure

Looks to me like he took off across Lake Spenard then turned to overfly the dirt strip on the other side (Z41). It's down below those buildings and is then a standard departure over Cook Inlet. Tricky, interlocked airspace around there, like threading a boxful of needles.

It might LOOK cowboy, but he's talking to Lake Hood tower which is a part of Anchorage Int. tower and also the tower for the dirt strip. It can be even more gnarly in GOOD weather!!

Re: weird lake hood departure

Except for the white-caps on Lake Hood, the departure is pretty typical. He is departing south on Lake Hood and making the turn to the east-west water lane that connects Lake Hood to Lake Spenard. The brownish building he appears to go around is the Alaska Airmen's Association on the south end of Airmen's Point, which is where the Lake Hood webcam is located.

He was probably cleared for Southeast with an East option. He was just turning left and flying over the east water lane. Then, it was probably a normal climbout and East Route Departure.

As BeeMan indicated, it isn't weird. The depth of field makes it look like he is going between buildings but those buildings are 900 feet apart and on different sides of the lake. Quite windy, though!

Since I've never been there, and knowing it's not normal to turn x-wind 5 feet about the water, and climb out going down wind, and from the video it "appears" he's flying between builings on departure, i came up with "weird"
