Whee's Bearhawk Project...Airworthiness Certificate issued!

Finally did it! My dad and I partnered up and will be building a Bearhawk. I'm not going to post a detailed build log here but I'll post pictures and some information as we build.

To start off we purchased a project from a guy and met him in Minnesota.

Fueling up in Bozeman, MT; the trailer we borrowed pulls hard so were averaging 9mpg and 200miles between fuel stops.Image

Drove till 3am when we stopped in Fargo,ND for a 3 hour nap in a 80$ hotel room then on to Litchfield,MN

We arrived, looked the project over and made the deal.

Fun stuff. Did you need to have an interpreter? I'm dealing with the Minnesota lingo this week.

Re: Whee's Bearhawk Project...the adventure begins

Congratulation Whee a most excellent choice. You will be amazed at what that plane will actually do. The only thing I caution is do not go with a small motor. Talk with Pat Fagan about travelling side by side with a 180 hp Bearhawk and who burned the most fuel. My dad and I scratch built Bearhawk #357 and it was a great 4.5 year journey together. It was not without it's and downs but it was still a great adventure. My dad passed on last year and the memories of building that plane and the two of us flying around the country side on one adventure after another will stay with me forever. I hope your adventure is as good as mine was.

Re: Whee's Bearhawk Project...the adventure begins

Congrats! But I don't envy you one bit--don't think I'd trust an airplane that I'd built, and frankly I don't have the patience to do it. Just transforming our screen room into a 4-season sun room one summer, and building the deck in the back of our house the next summer, took most of each of the two summers and all of my patience. I can't imagine a building project measured in years.

Congrats. I'm having a lot of fun building mine. Being able to spec it however you like is awesome, but it is definitely testing my airplane construction knowledge. You'll probably pass me up in no time, and you'll never look at another homebuilt the same way.

Way to go Whee. Tell us more about it when you get a chance. How far along is it. I may have some surplus parts/pieces for you depending on what your plans are.
