Getting close to having the conditional inspection done on my Experimental. I installed an ELT and it says in the book to only use Duracell MN1300 batteries which are nothing more than the fancy D batteries. I googled it and amazon sells them but I dont' really want to pay shipping on something like that. I did a search on Walmart and Target websites with no luck. Anybody know offhand of a store like that where I could pick up 6 of these? Didn't realize that's what it took..that outta help move my CG back some.

See if the "Batteries Plus" chain has any stores in your area. They seem to have a good selection at a decent price.

I have always had good luck with Batteries America

They have a nice 12v package for aviation portables that houses battery charger and all.

I'm going to try the Base Exchange here on base and then check Target when I go this weekend. I know it'll work on regular D's but I think it will void any warranty.

Go to your local drugstore, Safeway, Wallyworld, etc and take a close look at the Duracell coppertop D cell batteries. Look around where the date is printed and you will find the model number of the battery......which will probably show that you are holding the battery type you want. My IA thought it was gonna be a royal pain and mystical trying to find the part until I showed him that on the battery.

I put new ones in each year when I do the condition inspection. I use the old ones in my 5 cell Mag light, as they are still almost full charge.

FAR 91.52 "...The expiration date of the batteries must be indicated on the outside of the ELT battery case and recorded in the Aircraft logs..."

These batteries do leak occassionally just like any other D cell, so don't put em in and forget about em.

If your ELT has a remote switch there may be a little Duracell battery with a date on it there too.

I discovered this yesterday. I feel silly for posting this now. I just grabbed the Duracell Coppertop and looked and your right. It says MN1300 near the top of it. I wonder how Duracell managed to get the ELT company to put a sticker inside the case that says use ONLY Duracell MN1300 batteries. Pretty sure the other brands would work just the same

I think it's the expiration date that Durcell puts on the battery is what makes them approved by the ELT manufacturer. The expiration date of the batteries must be written on the outside of the ELT battery case.

I haven't checked all other D cells but I haven't seen an expiration date on any except Duracell. Other batters would work just fine but the FAA might say you don't know the expiration date of that battery so not approved.

It isn't something to feel silly about. The poster that mentioned the remote switch is correct. There is a duracell battery in there and it has a different number and is a bit harder to find but not much. I just happened to notice the numbers because I kept thinking that it couldn't be that hard to find the batteries listed....Had some fun with my IA on that one toolllll

As for how duracell managed to get their part number in the paperwork? Bet that there is an advertising payback somewhere in there for Duracell.
