6/21/11 I stopped in here today and am pretty sure I'll miss JC.
As of this date the field is very wet with standing water on the rwy, very soft (shall I say mushy?) and in need of cutting. The grass is knee high and I think I made the shortest landing of my flying career. It took 1800 rpm to keep it moving. My greatest fear was that I would sink into one of the mush holes. Fortunately, I avoided them. Unfortunately, I'm going to have a few days in Glacier Park waiting for the state to cut the grass and to let it dry out.
PS. I did a low fly by and saw no indication of standing water because the grass was so high. In fact, it looked great from 50'.

You're never too old to learn something stupid.
Everyone should watch out for the high strips, the snow has really been hanging on this year. There was a 182 stuck in the mud at Chamberlain Basin a couple of weeks ago. I wouldn't have expected the mud at Whitefish, though, it's not very high. Maybe they've been getting a lot of rain.
What can be done once you're on the ground to mitigate a soft, mushy runway? Air down your tires for a greater footprint? Dig little drainage ditches?

6/22/11 A call to the Aeronautics Division got the runway mowed today. They were just great about taking care of the grass. Now maybe a couple more days of warm wx will dry it out. Still some standing water and very soft spots at 10PM today.

There are worse places to be stuck! Glad it worked out ok and with this weather it should firm up pretty quick.
