If you want to go up, pull back on the controls. If you want to go down, pull back farther.

Mountainflier posted the pictures of the Pawnee, it technically is no longer a Pawnee any more because I switched it over to experimental exhibition to do some modification to make it a better stol airplane. The FAA required that I come up with a new name and serial for this airplane, so the new name for it is "Yellowhawk". Thank you for the comment, I hope you guys are enjoying some of the pictures that I have posted on it.

Did you have to add weight or re-balance the ailerons and flaps after extending the chord? Did the extension make a big difference? Did you add camber or just area?

So, what's it like having an upside down 235 HP Super Cub ?

Looks like that might do pretty well at the STOL contest in AK.

Other than tires, wingtips and control surfaces, what else is in there that's interesting?

Re: Who posted the pic of the Pawnee on Bush tires?

Just the other day I asked a guy who flies a 235-horse Pawnee glider tug how it handled. He told me it was pretty docile to land, but what I was getting at was how did it handle in the air? I figure with the kind of maneuvering that takes place during ag-plane op's (hammerhead turns after a spray pass, etc ) it must be pretty responsive. Ever since I read an article somebody wrote about the cessna ag-wagon entitled "the poor man's P51" I've had a hankering to fly an agplane, but it hasn't happened yet.

(To answer some EZFlaps questions) No I did not have to re-balance the ailerons or the flaps. The ailerons have much better contol at slow speed now with the extensions and the flap extension help the takeoff and landing performance. I removed all of the crop dusting parts including the hopper tank. I will list some of the modifications that this airplane has: 300 h.p. modified 0-540 Lycoming engine, 90 inch McCauley prop, larger horizontal stabilizers, elevators and rudder. It has two baggage compartments for camping equipment, current wing mod's are the wing extensions, the 2inch flap and aileron extensions on the trailing edge, V.G.s with flap fences. And of course the large A.B.W. on the main gear and tailwheel. The Yellowhawk flys 8 m.p.h. slower with the modifications that I have done to it from the original Pawnee airplane it was. It is a fun airplane to fly, compared to a good performance Super Cub there are pro's and con's, but it has a heavier duty airframe and larger engine with a combined extra weight of about 250-300 lbs. more than a Super Cub with the same mod,s on it. The 300 h.p. makes it climb a lot better than a Super Cub but it has a higher wing loading because of the extra weight so the stall speed is a little higher than a Super Cub. One of the mod's I want to to my airplane is put a larger flaps on it to make it fly slower and stall slower. The Pawnee's came with flaps that go to 57 degrees full down, but the flaps are to small in my opinion to make it a super stol airplane. I have been able to land and takeoff inside of 300 ft. measured at alitudes above 6000 ft. which I consider a good stol airplane.

Re: Who posted the pic of the Pawnee on Bush tires?

I have made more than 12,000 tows using various 235-260 hp Pawnees. They are on of my favorite airplanes and far superior in just about every aspect to a Super Cub (which I own one of and have flown since 1976). Only downside is the cruise speed sucks, even with a 260 HP and constant speed prop; it is a very draggy airframe. Also due to the draggy airframe, don't let it get slow on final. The sink rate goes way up when slow down and you may not have enough energy to flair.

Has any one else that is a member of Backcountry Pilots or know of any other Pawnee's that has been converted to a backcountry airplane? Lets talk about it if you know of any. From Mountainflier
